Description

The 2016 Camille Giroud Corton Grand Cru Clos de Roi is a powerful yet refined expression of one of Corton’s most coveted climats. Drawn from the east-facing slopes of the famous Corton hill, this Grand Cru Pinot Noir marries depth, structure, and mineral precision in a way that is unmistakably Burgundy. In the classic, ageworthy Camille Giroud style, it offers serious complexity while already showing an inviting, seductive charm in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue, with a slight translucent rim that hints at its Pinot Noir pedigree and Grand Cru concentration. The nose opens with ripe black cherry and wild blackberry, intertwined with earthy forest floor, fresh-turned soil, and a distinct note of wet stone that speaks clearly of Corton’s limestone-rich soils. Subtle undertones of dried rose petals, graphite, and a gentle touch of well-integrated oak (spice, a hint of vanilla and smoked tea) add further layers. On the palate, the 2016 Clos de Roi is both concentrated and finely poised. Succulent black fruits—black cherry, blackcurrant, and bramble—are framed by supple, rounded tannins that feel silky yet firm enough to promise a long life. A bright, mouth-watering acidity and a core of saline, stony minerality carry the flavours through to a long, persistent finish with notes of spice, dark fruits, and a subtle savoury edge. Already engaging now with a short decant, it has excellent aging potential: expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining more truffle, sous-bois, and gamey complexity with time in bottle.

Production
Clos de Roi is one of the crown jewels of the Corton Grand Cru appellation, perched on the slopes of the Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune with an ideal eastern exposure that captures the morning sun. Here, limestone and clay-rich soils give both structure and mineral finesse, forming the backbone of this wine’s personality. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the cuve. After a gentle pressing, the juice ferments with indigenous yeasts, allowing the character of the terroir and vintage to express itself without interventionist winemaking. The wine is then aged for around 15 months in French oak barrels, about 30% of which are new, resting on fine lees without bâtonnage. This élevage builds texture and aromatic complexity while preserving precision, freshness, and purity of fruit.

Food & Serving
This Corton Grand Cru is a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity. Classic pairings include roast or grilled red meats, hare saddle, slow-braised beef bourguignon, game stews, and mature hard or semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gruyère, or well-aged Tomme. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffle, or reduced meat jus. Serve at around 14–16°C; a gentle decant of 1–2 hours in its youth helps the wine open and soften the tannins, while older bottles should be decanted briefly and handled delicately to separate them from any sediment.

Producer
Founded in 1865 and based in Beaune, Maison Camille Giroud is one of Burgundy’s historically important négociant houses, long celebrated for crafting traditionally styled wines with impressive longevity. Over time, the domaine has complemented its négociant activities by acquiring vineyards across the Côte de Beaune, from village-level parcels to prestigious Grand Crus such as Corton Clos de Roi. The house philosophy centers on expressing the diversity of Burgundy’s terroirs with precision, allowing both the vineyard and the vintage to speak clearly. Producing around 30 different appellations each year—approximately 80% red and 20% white—in a relatively small total volume of about 50,000 bottles, Camille Giroud remains firmly quality-focused. In recent years, under the guidance of winemaker Carel Voorhuis, the domaine has gained renewed acclaim for its balance of classic structure and contemporary finesse, further cementing its reputation as a benchmark producer in the Côte de Beaune.
