Description
From one of Montalcino’s most storied crus, the 2015 Sassetti Livio Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a powerful, classically styled Tuscan red from an outstanding vintage. Produced only in the very best years and in limited quantities, this Riserva is sourced from the estate’s finest parcels in the famed Montosoli hill, where Sangiovese attains exceptional depth and longevity. The 2015 release follows the legendary 2012 Riserva and comes from a trio of benchmark Brunello vintages (2012, 2015, 2016), cementing its status as a collector’s wine with serious aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Pertimali Brunello Riserva shows a deep, dark garnet core with a ruby rim, hinting at both concentration and classic Sangiovese elegance. The nose is intense and layered, opening with dried red berries and ripe cherries, followed by notes of violet, dried rose, sweet and savory spice, and hints of balsamic, leather, and Mediterranean herbs. As it unfurls, subtle tones of tobacco and forest floor add extra complexity.
On the palate, this Riserva is full-bodied, firmly structured and beautifully proportioned. The fruit profile leans toward black cherry and macerated red berries, supported by dried fig, blood orange zest, and a delicate savory edge. Fine yet assertive tannins and vibrant acidity provide a robust framework, promising a long life ahead. The finish is long—easily a minute—marked by spice, balsamic notes, and a lingering mineral grip. While already impressive, this 2015 will reward patience and can comfortably evolve in the cellar for 15–25 years from release, gaining further complexity and refinement.
Production
Pertimali’s 16 hectares of vines sit in Montosoli, north of Montalcino, an area widely regarded as one of the appellation’s most privileged terroirs for Sangiovese. The vineyards are planted on a mix of marl, limestone and clay, with good elevation and excellent exposure that allows the grapes to ripen fully while maintaining freshness and aromatic lift. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are selected for the Riserva. In the cellar, the wine is traditionally vinified—fermented in temperature-controlled tanks with extended maceration to extract color, tannin and aroma, followed by a long élevage in large, seasoned oak casks and further bottle aging before release. This extended maturation, significantly longer than that of the classic Brunello, is what gives the Riserva its extra depth, polish and age-worthiness.
Food & Serving
This Brunello Riserva is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù, osso buco, and aged pecorino Toscano. It also shines alongside truffle-infused pastas and mushroom-based dishes that echo its earthy nuances. Serve at 18°C (around 64–66°F) in large, tulip-shaped glasses to allow the aromatics to open fully. Decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and bring out the wine’s full aromatic and textural complexity.
Producer
The Sassetti family has been rooted in Montalcino for over three generations, with Livio Sassetti at the helm of transforming the family’s Podere Pertimali into one of the appellation’s reference-point estates. Located in the revered Montosoli zone, the winery has played a key role in showcasing how Sangiovese from this hill can deliver profound structure, perfume and longevity. Livio has carefully renewed and expanded the vineyards over time while preserving the genetic heritage of old Sangiovese vines, ensuring continuity of style and quality. Today, Sassetti Livio Pertimali is recognized as one of the classic, traditional producers of Brunello di Montalcino, with their Riserva bottlings in top vintages like 2012, 2015 and 2016 frequently earning critical acclaim and a devoted following among serious collectors and Tuscan wine enthusiasts.
