Description

The 2015 Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru “Champans” is a benchmark red Burgundy from one of Volnay’s most revered domaines and most historic premier cru vineyards. In this ripe yet finely balanced vintage, Champans shows its signature combination of finesse, depth, and length, with a touch more generosity and power than many neighboring crus. Classic Volnay elegance meets serious structure, making this a collector-worthy bottle that still remains wonderfully drinkable in its youth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Champans displays a deep, vibrant ruby color with garnet reflections beginning to emerge at the rim, reflecting both its premier cru pedigree and a few years of bottle evolution. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe red and black cherries, wild strawberries and crushed raspberries mingle with notes of violet, rose petal, and peony, framed by subtle spice, fine oak, and hints of sous-bois, graphite, and crushed limestone. On the palate, this wine is all about refined power. The attack is silky yet energetic, with pure Pinot fruit—cherry, red currant, and plum—supported by tightly knit, fine-grained tannins and a precise, mineral backbone. Mid-palate, the wine broadens to reveal darker berry tones, licorice, and a touch of warm spice, before tapering into a long, persistent finish marked by floral lift and savory complexity. The 2015 vintage gives Champans extra density and generosity, but the trademark Volnay finesse remains front and center. Approachable now with aeration, it has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully for 10–20 years from vintage, gaining further aromatic complexity and textural harmony.

Production
Champans is one of Volnay’s historic premier cru “Têtes de Cuvée,” situated at the heart of the appellation on a southeast-facing mid-slope that captures optimal light and drainage. Marquis d’Angerville farms 3.98 hectares here, in two parallel parcels stretching from the top to the bottom of the slope. The upper part has poorer, thinner soils over a rocky limestone bench, bringing tension and minerality; as the slope descends, the soils become deeper, more clay-rich and stony, contributing volume, texture, and power to the wine. The domaine is fully biodynamic (conversion from 2006, certified from 2009), working the soils by plow, limiting yields with their fine but naturally low-yielding “Pinot d’Angerville” selection, and allowing parcels to rest under lucerne for several years before replanting. Harvest is done by hand, with careful selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification is traditional and precise: destemmed fruit, gentle extraction, and élevage in Burgundy barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak) to preserve terroir expression, purity of fruit, and the inherent finesse of Volnay.

Food & Serving
This Volnay 1er Cru Champans is a superb partner for refined, subtly rich dishes that echo its elegance and depth. Think roast duck with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal tenderloin, or a simple but perfectly cooked roast chicken with jus. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes (morels, girolles, or a truffle risotto), game birds, and delicate lamb preparations, as well as aged but not overpowering cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort, or mild tommes. Serve at 15–16 °C (59–61 °F) to highlight the wine’s aromatic complexity and silken texture. Decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to open the bouquet and soften the tannins; older bottles should be handled gently and, if decanted at all, only briefly before serving.

Producer
Domaine Marquis d’Angerville is one of Volnay’s reference estates and a historic force in Burgundy. Based around the famed Clos des Ducs monopole—already documented in a royal survey of 1507—the estate has long championed precise, terroir-driven wines and estate bottling at a time when selling to négociants was the norm. Under successive generations of the d’Angerville family, the domaine has become synonymous with classical, ageworthy Volnay, owning prime holdings in celebrated premiers crus such as Champans, Taillepieds, Caillerets, and Fremiet. Pioneers in clonal selection with their fine, low-yielding “Pinot d’Angerville,” and early adopters of biodynamic viticulture, they have helped set the standard for thoughtful, soil-respecting viticulture in the Côte de Beaune. Today, bottles from Marquis d’Angerville are sought worldwide for their purity, finesse, and their ability to transmit the character of each individual climat with remarkable clarity.
