Description
The 2015 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Magnum is one of the most iconic expressions of Barolo, crafted only in the finest vintages and released in very limited quantities. Drawn exclusively from the legendary Francia vineyard and bottled in magnum for extended ageing, this is a wine built for the long haul and for truly special occasions. Monfortino has long been a benchmark for traditional Barolo, a reference point for collectors and sommeliers seeking the purest expression of Nebbiolo, the Langhe, and time itself.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Monfortino shows a deep, vibrant garnet core with a brick-tinted rim already hinting at its noble evolution. The nose is strikingly complex and powerful: wild cherry, macerated raspberry, and dried rose petals layer over tar, liquorice, blood orange, and subtle notes of tobacco leaf, menthol, and crushed stones. With air, more savoury tones emerge—leather, dried herbs, and hints of porcini and underbrush.
On the palate, the wine is both muscular and remarkably precise. Intense Nebbiolo fruit—sour cherry, red currant, and pomegranate—is framed by firm, tightly-knit tannins and a vertical spine of acidity that drives the wine through a very long, resonant finish. Despite the warmth of the 2015 vintage, there is no heaviness here: the wine remains lifted and focused, with great tension and energy. The tannic structure is authoritative but finely sculpted, indicating outstanding aging potential. In magnum, this Monfortino will reward patience, likely evolving gracefully over 30–40 years or more, gaining further complexity, silkier texture, and increasingly ethereal aromatics.
Production
The 2015 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino is sourced from the renowned Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s great crus, known for its calcareous clay and marl soils that naturally yield Nebbiolo of profound structure and depth. The vines sit at altitude on steep, well-exposed slopes that foster ideal ripening while preserving acidity, especially important in a warm year like 2015. Harvest is done manually, with meticulous selection of only the healthiest and most perfectly ripe Nebbiolo bunches. True to the estate’s staunchly traditional philosophy, fermentation takes place in large, old wooden vats with extended maceration on the skins, extracting intense flavor, tannin, and aromatic complexity. The wine then undergoes a long maturation—typically around seven years—in large Slavonian oak botti before bottling, with the magnums offering a slower, more harmonious evolution over decades.
Food & Serving
This monumental Barolo deserves equally noble cuisine. It pairs beautifully with rich, savoury dishes such as braised beef or veal (brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, and roasted venison, as well as truffle-based dishes, mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Castelmagno. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. Given its youth and power, especially in magnum, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for current drinking, and even longer if opened in the next decade—to allow the wine to unfold its many layers.
Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most revered names in Piedmont, and Monfortino is its crown jewel. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate helped define what we now think of as classic, ageworthy Barolo, rooted in long macerations, extended aging in large botti, and an unwavering commitment to traditional methods. Located in Serralunga d’Alba, the Conterno family’s acquisition and development of the Francia vineyard elevated the estate to true cult status, with Monfortino becoming a global benchmark for Nebbiolo and one of Italy’s most collectible wines. Across generations, from Giacomo to Giovanni and now Roberto Conterno, the winery has maintained an uncompromising focus on quality, achieving consistently high critical acclaim and cementing its role as a standard-bearer for Barolo worldwide.
