Description

The 2015 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino is one of Piedmont’s most coveted wines, produced only in the finest vintages from a meticulous selection of Nebbiolo grapes. A benchmark for traditional Barolo, it combines immense concentration with refinement and a structure built for decades of aging. Often compared to the likes of Château Petrus in its home region, Monfortino is a collector’s icon with extremely limited availability and near-mythic status among Barolo enthusiasts.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Monfortino shows a deep, radiant garnet hue with a youthful vibrancy at the rim, hinting at its long life ahead. The nose is complex and enveloping, opening with warm aromas of ripe plums, dried cherries and rose petals, followed by layers of exotic spice, sandalwood, licorice, tar and a delicate hint of tobacco and dried herbs. As it evolves in the glass, more floral notes and subtle earthy nuances emerge, adding further depth and intrigue. On the palate, this is a powerful yet supremely poised Barolo, with a full-bodied, densely packed core of dark red fruit framed by incredibly fine-grained, polished tannins. The fruit is pure and precise, with notes of plum, black cherry and wild berries complemented by savory undertones of truffle, leather and spice. The acidity is vibrant but perfectly integrated, driving a very long, layered finish that echoes with floral, mineral and spicy notes. While already stunning in its youth, the 2015 Monfortino has an almost limitless aging potential; it will continue to gain complexity and nuance over the next 20–30+ years in a proper cellar.

Production
Monfortino is sourced from the revered Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, where steep slopes, calcareous-clay soils and a cool, breezy microclimate yield Nebbiolo of remarkable intensity and structure. The grapes are rigorously selected in the vineyard and harvested by hand, ensuring only the finest, perfectly ripe bunches make it into this cuvée. True to Giacomo Conterno’s traditional philosophy, the wine undergoes a long, slow fermentation with extended maceration on the skins, extracting profound color, tannin and aromatic complexity. After fermentation, the 2015 Monfortino is aged exclusively in large Slavonian oak botti for a minimum of seven years, followed by further refinement in bottle before release, resulting in a Barolo of exceptional depth, purity and longevity.

Food & Serving
This is a wine that shines alongside refined, richly flavored dishes such as braised beef or veal, slow-cooked lamb shank, game birds, Piedmontese specialties like brasato al Barolo, and white truffle dishes (tajarin or risotto) that echo its earthy, savory complexity. Mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged pecorino also make excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to allow the bouquet to fully unfurl. Decanting for 2–4 hours is strongly recommended in its youth; even with some bottle age, a gentle decant will help the wine open and show its full aromatic and textural range.

Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most legendary names in Barolo and a standard-bearer for traditional, long-lived Nebbiolo. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate rose to international prominence under Giacomo and later his son Giovanni, who created Monfortino as a flagship Barolo aimed at the highest possible quality and aging capacity. Today the estate is run with the same uncompromising philosophy, focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard work and classic long aging in large Slavonian oak. Widely regarded as one of the greatest producers in Piedmont, Giacomo Conterno’s wines—especially Monfortino—are routinely awarded top scores by leading critics and sought after by collectors around the world.
