Description
2015 Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the highly sought-after second wine of the legendary First Growth estate Château Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac. From a superb Bordeaux vintage, it offers a refined yet accessible expression of the grand vin’s opulence and structure. This is Pauillac with pedigree: powerful Cabernet fruit, polished tannins, and the unmistakable Mouton signature in a more approachable style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Le Petit Mouton shows a deep, youthful ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is generous and inviting, with layers of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry, and dark cherry, wrapped in notes of cedar, pencil shavings, tobacco leaf, and a touch of graphite, lifted by subtle hints of cocoa, vanilla, and sweet spice from careful oak aging.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet silky, with ripe, finely grained tannins and a core of pure cassis, plum, and blackberry fruit. Classic Pauillac notes of cedar, cigar box, and earthy minerality emerge with air, alongside a savoury, slightly smoky edge. The finish is long and persistent, with refreshing acidity that keeps the wine vibrant rather than heavy. While already enjoyable after a brief decant, this 2015 has the structure to develop beautifully for another 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances of leather, truffle, and forest floor over time.
Production
Le Petit Mouton is sourced from the younger vines and selected parcels of Château Mouton Rothschild’s illustrious Pauillac estate, planted on deep gravel soils over limestone and clay – a classic Left Bank terroir that delivers Cabernet Sauvignon of great power and precision. The 2015 blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to add aromatic lift and spice. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and sorted meticulously before vinification in temperature-controlled vats. Fermentation and maceration are carefully managed to extract fine tannins and pure fruit, followed by maturation in oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where the wine gains texture, aromatic complexity, and its polished, luxurious profile.
Food & Serving
This 2015 Pauillac is a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes such as roasted or grilled lamb (rack, saddle, or leg), dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, duck breast, or venison with red wine jus. It also works beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom-based sauces, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity without emphasizing the alcohol or tannins. A decant of 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open fully, soften the structure, and bring forward the layered fruit and subtle oak nuances.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates and a Premier Cru Classé (First Growth) from the fabled commune of Pauillac in the Médoc. Owned by the Rothschild family since the mid-19th century, it was elevated to First Growth status in 1973—an historic and rare revision of the original 1855 Classification—thanks largely to the vision and perseverance of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The estate is renowned not only for its richly opulent, ageworthy Cabernet-based wines, but also for its pioneering approach to estate bottling and its tradition of commissioning artists to design labels for each vintage. Le Petit Mouton, created as the estate’s official second wine, offers wine lovers access to the style, terroir, and prestige of Mouton Rothschild in a more approachable, earlier-drinking form, while still reflecting the meticulous standards that have made the château a benchmark of Pauillac and of Bordeaux as a whole.
