Description

The 2015 Château Angélus 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion is a benchmark Right Bank Bordeaux from one of the appellation’s most revered estates. From an exceptional vintage, this wine combines power, polish, and precision in a style that’s both luxurious and deeply classic. As a Premier Grand Cru Classé A at the time of this harvest, Angélus 2015 stands as a reference point for collectors and lovers of great Saint-Émilion alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Château Angélus shows a deep, saturated garnet color with a nearly opaque core and a vibrant, youthful rim. The nose is opulent yet refined, opening with ripe blackberries, black cherries, and crème de cassis, layered with violets, graphite, espresso, and fine cedar. With air, more complexity emerges: warm spices, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and a subtle hint of truffle and wet stone. On the palate, this is full-bodied and richly textured, with a velvety attack that quickly reveals impressive structure and drive. Ripe black and blue fruits are framed by finely grained tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that keeps the wine graceful despite its concentration. Notes of plum, licorice, cocoa, and savory herb linger on a long, seamless finish. The 2015 vintage has the stuffing for decades of development; while already seductive in youth with proper aeration, it will continue to evolve beautifully over 20–30 years, gaining more tertiary nuances of leather, cigar box, and earth.

Production
Château Angélus is located on the south-facing slopes at the foot of the Saint-Émilion hillside, a privileged terroir of clay-limestone and sandy-clay soils that provides both power and aromatic finesse. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot and Cabernet Franc, grape varieties that thrive on these well-draining, sun-drenched exposures. Harvesting is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it into the grand vin. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats (stainless steel and/or concrete), with careful extraction tailored to each lot to preserve fruit purity and tannin finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a high proportion of which are new, for around 18–24 months, allowing the oak to integrate and support, rather than dominate, the wine’s complex character.

Food & Serving
The 2015 Château Angélus is a superb table partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef, venison or other game, and dishes featuring truffles or wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with duck, well-marbled ribeye, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural elegance. For drinking now, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open; older bottles will require more delicate handling and a shorter, gentle decant to separate sediment while preserving mature aromatics.

Producer
Château Angélus is one of the great names of Saint-Émilion, with a family history on the estate stretching back to the early 20th century and vine-growing roots in the region dating to the 18th century. Recognized as Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the Saint-Émilion classification from 2012, Angélus has long been synonymous with meticulous viticulture, precise winemaking, and a style that marries depth with elegance, driven in large part by its exemplary Cabernet Franc. Under the stewardship of the de Boüard de Laforest family, the château has become a standard-bearer for the appellation, consistently producing wines that are highly sought after by collectors and frequently earning top critical acclaim in the greatest Bordeaux vintages.
