Description
The 2014 Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia in magnum format is a refined expression of one of Italy’s most iconic wines, presented in the ideal size for slow evolution and special occasions. Despite a challenging vintage in Tuscany, Sassicaia’s 2014 shows the estate’s trademark elegance, balance, and finesse rather than sheer power. As a magnum, it offers greater aging potential, making it a compelling choice for collectors and anyone looking to experience Sassicaia at its most nuanced.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Sassicaia shows a deep ruby hue with garnet reflections beginning to emerge, a sign of graceful early development rather than maturity. The nose is fragrant and layered, opening with blackcurrant and wild berries, followed by notes of violet, cedar, tobacco leaf, and a subtle menthol edge. Hints of graphite, dried herbs, and sweet spice add complexity as it breathes.
On the palate, this vintage leans toward finesse over opulence. Medium to medium-plus bodied, it offers finely etched dark fruit—blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry—framed by vibrant acidity and beautifully polished tannins. The oak integration is seamless, showing nuances of sandalwood, cigar box, and a touch of vanilla without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is long, savory, and delicately mineral, reflecting its coastal terroir. In magnum, the 2014 has a notably longer aging curve; it is drinking well now with proper aeration but has the potential to evolve gracefully for another 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes over time.
Production
Sassicaia hails from the coastal terroir of Bolgheri in Toscana, where the vineyards of Tenuta San Guido stretch across gently sloping hills with stony, well-drained soils rich in galestro and limestone—conditions that famously recall the gravelly terroirs of Bordeaux. The proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea brings cooling breezes and moderates the climate, preserving acidity and aromatic freshness even in warmer years. In 2014, meticulous vineyard work and strict selection were crucial due to a more complicated growing season, with careful green harvesting and sorting to ensure only the best berries made it into the final blend. The wine is typically composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. Vinification is traditional yet precise: fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by extended maceration to gently extract color and tannin. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a mix of new and second-use) for around two years, and further refined in bottle—here, in magnum—before release, allowing the components to knit together into a harmonious whole.
Food & Serving
The 2014 Sassicaia Magnum pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes rather than overly rich or heavy preparations. Think classic Tuscan fare such as bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with rosemary, veal chops, or braised beef with porcini mushrooms. It also works wonderfully with game birds, duck breast, truffle pasta, mature pecorino, and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is recommended—around 1 to 2 hours before serving for a magnum—to allow the wine to fully open and express its aromatic complexity. Use a large-bowled Bordeaux glass to highlight its structure, perfume, and elegance.
Producer
Tenuta San Guido is one of the most renowned estates in Italy and the pioneer of the ‘Super Tuscan’ movement. Located in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, the estate rose to international fame with Sassicaia, a wine initially made for private consumption in the mid-20th century by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet vines inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux. The first commercial vintage, 1968, was released in the 1970s and quickly earned critical acclaim, eventually leading to the creation of the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC—the only Italian appellation dedicated to a single estate and wine. Today, Tenuta San Guido is recognized as a benchmark not only for Tuscany but for fine wine worldwide, consistently producing wines celebrated for their balance, longevity, and unmistakable sense of place.
