Description

The 2014 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore in magnum is a refined expression of one of Tuscany’s most celebrated Super Tuscans, presented in the ideal format for graceful long-term aging. Crafted on the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri, this wine marries Bordeaux-inspired precision with unmistakable Mediterranean character. The 2014 vintage, often considered more classical and restrained, has produced an Ornellaia that is all about elegance, nuance, and drinkability rather than sheer power.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with garnet hints beginning to emerge at the rim, a sign of its evolving complexity. The nose is refined and layered, offering aromas of blackcurrant, wild blackberry, and ripe plum, intertwined with notes of graphite, cedar, dried violets, and a touch of Mediterranean herbs and sweet spice. Subtle hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf, and pencil shavings appear with air, giving the bouquet a distinctly Bordeaux-like sophistication. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine with a poised, harmonious profile rather than a blockbuster style. Fine-grained tannins frame flavors of dark berries, black cherry, and mulberry, supported by savory notes of bay leaf, sage, and a discreet minerality. The oak is beautifully integrated, bringing nuances of vanilla, mocha, and toasted spice without overwhelming the fruit. The 2014 offers freshness and lift, with a long, elegant finish marked by persistent fruit and a delicate, saline edge. In magnum, this wine has excellent aging potential; while already approachable with some aeration, it should continue to develop greater complexity and tertiary notes (leather, truffle, cigar box) over the next 10–15 years and beyond.

Production
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia lies in the coastal zone of Bolgheri in western Tuscany, where vineyards benefit from a unique combination of maritime breezes, plentiful sunshine, and well-draining, varied soils of alluvial sand, gravel, clay, and limestone. This terroir is particularly well-suited to Bordeaux varieties, which form the backbone of Ornellaia—typically Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Grapes are harvested by hand in small boxes to preserve berry integrity, with careful sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. Each parcel is vinified separately to capture the nuances of different exposures and soil types: fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks, followed by maceration to extract color, aroma, and structure. After fermentation, the wines are transferred to French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) for malolactic fermentation and aging, usually around 18 months, before blending and an additional period of bottle refinement to achieve perfect integration and balance—especially important in large formats like magnums.

Food & Serving
The 2014 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Magnum pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes that match its structure and complexity without overpowering its elegance. Think classic Tuscan preparations such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or veal, lamb racks with rosemary and garlic, or game birds like pigeon and duck. It also works wonderfully with truffle dishes, porcini mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. Given the magnum format and the wine’s layered profile, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften, especially if you are enjoying it in the next few years.

Producer
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, founded in 1981 near the medieval village of Bolgheri, is one of Italy’s most acclaimed estates and a key pioneer of the Super Tuscan movement. From its inception, the estate set out to challenge the boundaries of traditional Tuscan winemaking by planting Bordeaux varieties on the Tuscan coast, guided by the vision that Bolgheri’s maritime climate and diverse soils could yield world-class wines. Ornellaia quickly rose to international prominence, earning consistently high critical scores and establishing itself as a benchmark for modern Italian reds. Today, the estate is owned by the Frescobaldi family, one of Tuscany’s most historic wine dynasties, and remains a reference point for precision viticulture, meticulous cellar work, and wines that combine power, elegance, and age-worthiness. Ornellaia’s flagship Bolgheri Superiore is widely recognized as one of the great wines of Italy and a standard-bearer for the Bolgheri appellation on the global stage.
