Description
The 2014 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Napa Valley’s most coveted wines, crafted in tiny quantities and consistently ranked among the world’s elite collectibles. Sourced from the legendary estate vineyard in Oakville, this wine marries power and elegance in a way that few Cabernets can. The 2014 vintage is particularly admired for its balance, purity of fruit and finely etched structure, offering both immediate charm and long-term cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon shows a deep, vibrant ruby to opaque garnet core with a youthful, inky concentration at the center. The nose is intensely aromatic yet refined, opening with blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and dark cherry, followed by layers of crushed violets, graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and subtle baking spices. Hints of cocoa, pencil shavings and warm earth emerge with air, adding complexity and depth.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied but impeccably proportioned, with a silken texture and ultra-fine, polished tannins. Concentrated flavors of cassis, black plum and blackberry compote are interwoven with notes of dark chocolate, espresso, licorice and savory herbs. The acidity is vibrant yet seamless, lending freshness and precision to the rich fruit. The finish is remarkably long and persistent, echoing with mineral nuances and refined oak. While already impressive in its youth, this 2014 has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully for 20+ years in a proper cellar, gaining additional complexity and tertiary character over time.
Production
Screaming Eagle’s estate vineyard is located in Oakville, at the heart of Napa Valley, where well-drained, gravelly and alluvial soils combine with a moderate climate to produce Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional concentration and finesse. Meticulous vineyard management—low yields, careful canopy work and stringent bunch selection—ensures only the finest fruit makes it to the winery. Harvest is done entirely by hand, often in multiple passes to pick each block at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the grapes are sorted with extreme precision before a carefully controlled fermentation in small vessels, allowing parcel-by-parcel vinification. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels, predominantly new, to add texture and complexity without overshadowing the purity of the fruit, ultimately bottled with an emphasis on elegance, balance and longevity.
Food & Serving
This 2014 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with refined, protein-rich dishes that can stand up to its depth and structure. Think dry-aged ribeye, herb-crusted rack of lamb, slow-braised short ribs, or venison with a dark, reduction sauce. It also complements earthy, luxurious flavors such as black truffle risotto, mushroom ragù, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) and decant for 1–3 hours prior to serving to allow the wine to fully express its aromatics and complexity, especially in its youth.
Producer
Screaming Eagle was founded in the early 1990s in Oakville and quickly became one of Napa Valley’s most sought-after cult wineries, renowned for its incredibly limited production and consistently high quality. The estate’s vineyard, perched on the eastern side of Oakville, benefits from a combination of ideal soils, exposure and climate that yields Cabernet Sauvignons of remarkable intensity and refinement. Over the years, Screaming Eagle has earned near-mythical status, with its wines regularly receiving top scores from leading critics and commanding strong demand among collectors worldwide. Its meticulous approach in both vineyard and cellar has set a benchmark for ultra-premium Napa Cabernet and helped define the region’s reputation for world-class, ageworthy wines.
