Description
The 2014 Leroy Côte de Nuits-Villages is a rare opportunity to experience Lalou Bize-Leroy’s magic in a slightly more accessible appellation, while still capturing the haunting finesse that has made Domaine Leroy legendary. Drawn from biodynamically farmed parcels of Pinot Noir across the Côte de Nuits, this wine delivers the purity, energy and precision that have defined the domaine for decades. The 2014 vintage in Burgundy favored elegance over sheer power, and in Leroy’s hands that translates into a wine of detail, lift and superb balance, with the capacity to mature gracefully.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Leroy Côte de Nuits-Villages shows a luminous, translucent ruby hue with a delicate garnet rim, typical of finely made Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits. It’s immediately expressive on the nose, with lifted aromas of wild red berries, morello cherry and cranberry layered over rose petal, violets, subtle forest floor, fine tea leaves and a discreet, refined oak spice.
On the palate, the wine is precise and tensile rather than opulent, with a silky yet vibrant texture that glides across the tongue. Juicy red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant are framed by savoury notes of dried herbs, undergrowth, and a hint of graphite and spice. The tannins are ultra-fine and chalky, giving structure without hardness, while the acidity brings a mouthwatering, almost saline freshness into the long, persistent finish. In 2014, this Côte de Nuits-Villages has the clarity and definition to drink beautifully now with some air, but it also has the concentration and balance to evolve for another 8–12 years, gaining more tertiary complexity and silkiness with time in bottle.
Production
The Pinot Noir vines for Leroy’s Côte de Nuits-Villages are rooted in classic Côte de Nuits terroirs, with limestone-rich subsoils and clay-limestone topsoils that naturally limit vigor and emphasize minerality and aromatic lift. All parcels are farmed biodynamically, a philosophy Lalou Bize-Leroy has championed for more than thirty years, using herbal preparations, strict yield control, and meticulous canopy management to achieve perfectly balanced, healthy grapes. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with severe selection both in the vineyard and on sorting tables to retain only impeccably ripe, unblemished fruit. The grapes are then placed into barrels or small vats and vinified with indigenous yeasts, allowing a spontaneous fermentation that reflects each parcel’s character. Elevage typically takes place in fine French oak, a significant proportion of it new, but handled with great sensitivity so that the wood frames the wine rather than dominates it, and the wine is bottled with minimal intervention to preserve purity and precision.
Food & Serving
This 2014 Leroy Côte de Nuits-Villages shines alongside refined, delicately flavored dishes that echo its finesse. Think roast duck breast with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal tenderloin, or a simple but perfectly roasted chicken with wild mushrooms and thyme. It’s also superb with game birds, truffle-infused dishes, and aged but not overly powerful cheeses like Comté, Tomme or mild goat’s cheese. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting for 30–60 minutes can help the wine unfurl its floral and earthy nuances, especially in its youth, though particularly mature bottles can be served directly from the bottle with gentle handling.
Producer
Domaine Leroy, based in Burgundy, is widely regarded as one of the most revered and influential wine estates in the world. Its origins trace back to the late 19th century with Maison Leroy, the négociant house founded by François Leroy, but the modern domaine was shaped decisively by François’s descendant, Lalou Bize-Leroy, who established Domaine Leroy in 1988. Lalou, a former co-owner and co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, brought an uncompromising vision to Leroy: extremely low yields, rigorous selection, and an early, pioneering embrace of biodynamic viticulture. Today, the domaine’s wines – from grand crus such as Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Chambertin to more modest appellations like Côte de Nuits-Villages – are benchmarks for complexity, finesse and longevity. Produced in minute quantities and frequently mentioned in the same breath as Burgundy’s greatest names, Leroy’s bottles have become some of the most coveted and collectible wines on the planet.
