Description
Bottled exclusively in magnum, the 2014 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino is one of the most coveted expressions of Nebbiolo in the world, and a landmark vintage even by Monfortino’s exalted standards. Sourced entirely from the famed Francia cru in Serralunga d'Alba, this 100-point (RP) wine captures the drama of a challenging growing season that finished in spectacular fashion. Often described by Roberto Conterno himself as his “vintage of the heart,” the 2014 Monfortino represents both a milestone in the estate’s history and a pure, unblended snapshot of a legendary vineyard.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Monfortino shows a deep garnet core with luminous brick-tinged edges, already hinting at its classic Barolo evolution yet retaining striking concentration. The wine’s clarity and viscosity reflect its density and extraordinary extract.
The nose is intensely complex and slow to unfurl, with layers of dark cherry, wild strawberry, and dried rose petals wrapped in notes of liquorice, tobacco leaf, and sweet spices. With air, more subtle tones emerge: tar, iron, crushed rocks, balsamic herbs, and a faint echo of truffle that speaks clearly of Serralunga’s noble terroir. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet supremely refined: a core of vibrant red and black fruits is framed by exceptionally long, silky, and tightly knit tannins. The texture is both firm and caressing, with a spine of vivid acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. Hints of blood orange zest, anise, savoury spices, and mineral saltiness stretch into an almost endless finish. The structure and concentration are such that this magnum has enormous aging potential, easily 40–50 years or more in a proper cellar, with the best drinking window likely beginning a decade from now and extending well into mid-century and beyond.
Production
This Barolo Riserva Monfortino is crafted exclusively from Nebbiolo grown in the steep, south- and southwest-facing slopes of the Francia cru in Serralunga d’Alba. Here, poor calcareous-clay soils, high elevation, and excellent exposure combine to yield small, thick-skinned berries with great natural acidity and tannic backbone. The 2014 growing season was long and drawn out: after a rainy summer, a crucial spell of warm, dry weather from late August through October allowed a slow, even ripening, ideal for Nebbiolo’s tannin development. Harvest is carried out by hand, with an uncompromising selection of bunches both in the vineyard and at the winery. True to the estate’s deeply traditional philosophy, fermentation involves long macerations on the skins, extracting profound color, tannin, and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged for an extended period in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks (botti), where it slowly refines and harmonises without being marked by overt wood influence, allowing the character of Francia and the 2014 vintage to shine with purity and precision.
Food & Serving
This is a meditative, collector-level Barolo best showcased with equally noble cuisine. It pairs magnificently with classic Piemontese dishes such as brasato al Barolo (wine-braised beef), tajarin with white truffle, and slow-cooked veal shank or ossobuco, as well as game birds, roasted lamb, and porcini-based dishes. Mature hard cheeses, especially aged Parmigiano-Reggiano or Castelmagno, also make a superb match. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F), ideally in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow the wine to fully open. Given the youth and density of the 2014 in magnum format, generous aeration is essential: decant for at least 3–4 hours if drinking now, and even longer won’t hurt. For peak experiences in the future, a gentle double-decant shortly before service will help the wine express its full aromatic and textural complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1908 by Giacomo Conterno in Monforte d’Alba, the Giacomo Conterno estate is one of the historic and defining names of traditional Barolo. What began as a simple osteria with house wine evolved, under Giacomo’s son Giovanni, into a benchmark winery that set the standard for long-lived, ageworthy Barolo. The first Barolo Monfortino was released in 1920, quickly becoming a reference point for collectors and a symbol of old-school craftsmanship. The purchase of the Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba in 1961 was a turning point, securing a top-class source of Nebbiolo that now underpins the estate’s greatest wines, including Monfortino itself. Today, under Roberto Conterno’s leadership, the winery remains steadfastly committed to traditional methods—long macerations, extended aging in large Slavonian oak, and minimal intervention in the cellar—while continually refining quality. Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Monfortino is regarded as one of Italy’s most important and collectible wines, a global benchmark for what Nebbiolo and the Barolo terroir can achieve at the very highest level.
