Description
The 2014 Domaine d'Eugénie Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a poised, classically styled Burgundy that captures the gravitas of one of the Côte de Nuits’ most storied vineyards. Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir, this wine marries depth and finesse, balancing the power of Clos Vougeot with the precision and elegance that define the 2014 vintage. It’s a bottle for collectors and Burgundy lovers who appreciate nuance, structure and the quiet confidence of a great terroir speaking through the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Clos Vougeot shows a deep ruby core with garnet hues beginning to form at the rim, reflecting its decade of graceful evolution. The nose opens with pure red and black fruits—wild cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant—layered with rose petals, violets, and a delicate hint of forest floor. Subtle nuances of spice box, cedar, dried herbs and fine oak emerge with air, adding complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
On the palate, the 2014 is precise and finely etched rather than opulent, with a medium to full body and a firm, well-knit tannic spine. Flavors of red cherry, blackberry and pomegranate are supported by notes of underbrush, licorice, and a touch of smoke and savory minerality that speaks clearly of Clos Vougeot’s limestone-rich soils. The acidity is vibrant and refreshing, giving the wine lift and length, and the finish is long, taut and saline, with lingering red fruit and spice. While already entering a lovely drinking window, this wine still has the structure and energy to develop further in bottle over the next 8–12 years, gaining additional tertiary complexity.
Production
Domaine d’Eugénie works with prime parcels within the historic Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, a walled vineyard whose mix of limestone and clay, varied slopes and excellent drainage yield Pinot Noir of depth and character. The vines here draw on the Côte de Nuits’ cool continental climate, which in 2014 delivered a balanced growing season with good ripeness and fresh acidity. Harvesting is done by hand, with rigorous sorting of the bunches to ensure only the healthiest, most perfectly mature grapes are used. In the cellar, the fruit is typically destemmed, followed by a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve aromatic purity and finesse. Aging takes place in French oak barrels—often with a proportion of new oak—where the wine matures on fine lees, gaining texture and complexity while retaining the transparency and precision that define both Domaine d’Eugénie’s style and the Clos Vougeot terroir.
Food & Serving
This 2014 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes that match its structure and earthy elegance. Think roasted duck breast with cherries, côte de veau with morel mushrooms, beef tenderloin with truffle jus, or game birds such as pigeon or partridge. It also shines alongside mushroom-based dishes, like wild mushroom risotto or a truffle-infused poultry dish, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended at this stage of its evolution to allow the bouquet to fully open and to soften the tannins, particularly if opened on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
Domaine d’Eugénie was founded in 2006 when the historic vineyards of Domaine René Engel in Vosne-Romanée were acquired and reimagined under new ownership, marking the birth of a serious player in the upper echelon of Burgundy. With holdings in some of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted appellations, including Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, the estate has quickly established a reputation for precision, purity and meticulous attention to detail, both in the vineyard and the cellar. Working with low yields, sustainable viticulture and careful, terroir-driven winemaking, Domaine d’Eugénie has become a respected reference in the region, producing wines that are highly sought after by collectors for their refinement, balance and clear expression of site.
