Description
The 2014 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is a powerful, deeply structured expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most revered estates. Sourced from the domaine’s 2.7 hectares on the red clay soils of Bonnes Mares, it combines muscular frame with the finesse and aromatic lift that define great Chambolle wines. In 2014, Vogüé crafted a wine of intensity, purity and poise, built both for immediate fascination and long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru shows a dark, concentrated ruby core with a hint of garnet at the rim, reflecting both the depth of fruit and its emerging evolution. The nose is intense and layered: violets, blueberries and black cherries mingle with wild blackberry, subtle forest undergrowth, and fine spices from its time in oak. With air, more floral perfume and mineral notes of crushed rock and chalk emerge, adding definition and complexity.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied for Chambolle, with a firm, authoritative structure that justifies its reputation as the domaine’s most robust and “masculine” cuvée. Dark berry fruit—blueberries, black cherries and mulberries—is wrapped around a core of vibrant acidity and sinewy, ripe tannins. The 35% new French oak is beautifully integrated, lending notes of cocoa, sweet spice and a gentle toastiness without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long, persistent and finely etched, promising a graceful evolution. While already accessible to seasoned Burgundy lovers after a long decant, this 2014 has the depth and concentration to age admirably for 15–25 years from vintage, gaining further complexity and silkier texture with time.
Production
Bonnes Mares lies on the border of Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, and Vogüé’s parcels sit predominantly on the coveted red clay soils that give the wine its hallmark power, color and intensity. The subsoil of limestone and marl provides excellent drainage and a strong mineral backbone, ideal for Pinot Noir of Grand Cru stature. At Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, all grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then rigorously sorted to ensure only pristine fruit enters the winery. Fermentations are carried out in traditional open wooden vats, allowing for gentle extraction and careful temperature control to preserve aromatic purity and terroir expression. After fermentation, the wine is aged for an extended period—typically 18–24 months—in French oak barrels, around 35% of which are new, before bottling with minimal intervention to maintain its authenticity and sense of place.
Food & Serving
This Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is best matched with richly flavored, refined dishes that can stand up to its structure and depth: think roast duck, venison, pigeon, or lamb racks with herbs, as well as slow-braised beef, truffled poultry, and game birds. Earthy accompaniments such as wild mushrooms, roasted root vegetables, and dishes featuring black truffle or morels will echo the wine’s complexity and savoriness. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight both aromatics and structure. For current drinking, decant for 1.5–3 hours to allow the tannins to soften and the bouquet to fully unfurl; older, well-cellared bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant mainly to remove any sediment.
Producer
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is one of the most historic and prestigious estates in Burgundy, with roots in Chambolle-Musigny dating back to the 15th century. The domaine is most famously associated with Musigny, where it is the dominant owner and the sole producer of the exceedingly rare Musigny Blanc Grand Cru—arguably the most unique and elusive white Grand Cru in the Côte d’Or. Across its holdings, including Bonnes Mares, the estate is renowned for its meticulous vineyard work, low yields and traditional, non-interventionist winemaking that privilege terroir expression over fashion. Over the decades, Vogüé’s wines have become benchmarks for Chambolle-Musigny and are highly sought after by collectors worldwide, consistently earning top critical acclaim and cementing the domaine’s status as a pillar of Burgundy’s fine wine heritage.
