Description

Bottled in an impressive magnum format, the 2014 Château Ausone is a benchmark Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A, uniting power, precision and extraordinary aging potential. From one of Bordeaux’s most coveted limestone slopes, this wine encapsulates the elegance and structure that have made Ausone a legend among Right Bank estates. The 2014 vintage offers a particularly refined, classical profile—perfect for collectors seeking both finesse and longevity in a large-format bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Château Ausone Magnum shows a deep, saturated garnet-purple hue with a vibrant rim, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose unfolds in layers: blackberries, black cherries and ripe plums mingle with violets, crushed stone, graphite and subtle licorice, followed by touches of cigar box, cedar and a delicate spice from new French oak. On the palate, this is poised and medium to full-bodied, with superb definition. The Cabernet Franc brings lift, floral intensity and a cool, mineral backbone, while the Merlot adds plush dark fruit and texture. Fine-grained, tightly knit tannins and fresh, vivid acidity give the wine remarkable precision, leading into a long, saline, limestone-driven finish. In magnum, the 2014 is built for extended cellaring—expect a graceful evolution over 20–30+ years, with the larger format stretching its drinking window and preserving its aromatics and structure.

Production
Château Ausone’s vineyards are perched on the steep, south-facing limestone and clay-limestone slopes just outside the village of Saint-Émilion—one of the most prized terroirs in Bordeaux. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Franc and Merlot in near-equal parts, sourced from old vines rooted deep into the limestone bedrock, which imparts remarkable freshness and minerality. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, parcel by parcel, with rigorous sorting to ensure only the healthiest, perfectly ripe berries make it into the cuves. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, often a mix of oak and stainless steel, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse over sheer power. The wine is then aged for around 18–24 months in a high proportion of new French oak barriques, where it gains complexity, polish and subtle toast without losing the signature purity and tension of Ausone’s terroir.

Food & Serving
The 2014 Château Ausone Magnum is a superb partner for refined, savory dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-cooked veal, duck breast, or game birds like guinea fowl. Its depth and structure also complement richer preparations—think beef tenderloin with truffle jus, wild mushroom risotto, or dishes featuring black truffle and root vegetables—as well as aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open. As the wine matures, a shorter, gentle decant will help remove sediment and bring its secondary and tertiary notes to the fore.

Producer
Château Ausone is one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, holding the rare Premier Grand Cru Classé A status in Saint-Émilion—a classification shared by only a tiny handful of properties. With origins dating back to Roman times (it is named after the poet Ausonius), the château sits on some of the appellation’s steepest and most prestigious limestone slopes. Over generations, the estate has become synonymous with wines of exceptional balance, marrying the aromatic complexity and finesse of Cabernet Franc with the richness of Merlot. Ausone’s tiny production, meticulous vineyard work and unwavering focus on quality have made it a reference point for Right Bank Bordeaux, with its wines regularly earning top scores from critics and commanding a place in the world’s finest cellars.
