Description

2014 Champagne Philipponnat Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé is a rare, collector-worthy rosé Champagne from one of Champagne’s most legendary single vineyards. Sourced exclusively from the precipitously steep Clos des Goisses in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, it marries power, precision and finesse in a deeply vinous style. With extremely limited production of only a few thousand bottles, this tenth rosé release from the Clos offers an intense, terroir-driven expression that stands as both great Champagne and great wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé 2014 shows a luminous, delicate pink hue with a very fine, persistent mousse that speaks to its long maturation on the lees. The nose is elegant yet expressive, opening with bright citrus notes of mandarin and blood orange, followed by granateapple juice, subtle red berries and a whisper of chalky minerality. With air, more complex layers emerge: hints of white pepper, delicate spice and a touch of toasted pastry from the partial barrel élevage. On the palate, this is focused and silky, with a brisk, mouthwatering acidity preserved by the absence of malolactic fermentation. Flavours of mandarin, peach and pomegranate are interwoven with subtle spice and a saline, mineral tension that stretches the wine out in a long, sculpted finish. The extra-brut dosage of 4.5 g/L keeps the wine taut and dry, highlighting its vinous depth and the grip contributed by the 30% rosé de saignée component. Already beautifully poised on release after around ten years of aging in the cellars, it has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully for decades in a good cellar.

Production
Clos des Goisses is a walled, south-facing hillside vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, famed for its extreme slope and pure chalk subsoil, which together produce some of Champagne’s most powerful and distinctive wines. The 2014 Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé is composed of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, with about 30% of the blend made as rosé de saignée, achieved through a cold maceration of Pinot Noir grapes before fermentation to extract delicate colour and fine tannic structure. Around 70% of the must is traditionally vinified in oak barrels, adding complexity and texture without encouraging premature oxidation. Malolactic fermentation is deliberately blocked to preserve the vibrant natural acidity and to balance the intensity of the terroir. After blending, the wine is bottled and aged for approximately 10 years at a constant 12°C in Philipponnat’s historic cellars in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ before disgorgement, resulting in remarkable depth, refinement and stability.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic rosé Champagne that shines at the table with richly flavoured, savoury dishes rather than simple aperitif fare. It pairs beautifully with game birds such as roasted pigeon or duck, especially with fruit-accented sauces (raspberry, cherry or pomegranate), as well as veal, roasted pork with stone fruits, or delicate lamb dishes. It also complements refined Japanese cuisine, tuna or salmon tataki, and complex seafood preparations like lobster with citrus butter or spiced shellfish. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatic spectrum and texture to unfurl. Decanting for 20–30 minutes in a chilled carafe can further open up the wine’s layers of spice and minerality, particularly in its youth or when enjoyed within a few years of release.

Producer
Philipponnat is a historic Champagne house based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, with roots in the region dating back to 1522. Long respected by connoisseurs for its terroir-driven, vinous Champagnes, the house is especially renowned for Clos des Goisses, one of the first single-vineyard Champagnes ever bottled and still one of the region’s most iconic sites. Philipponnat’s style emphasises ripe fruit, low dosage and meticulous vineyard work, resulting in wines that are both gastronomic and age-worthy. Over the decades, Clos des Goisses wines—both blanc and the very limited rosé—have earned a cult following among collectors and sommeliers worldwide, securing Philipponnat’s reputation as one of Champagne’s benchmark artisanal producers.
