Description
2014 Champagne Philipponnat Extra Brut Clos des Goisses is one of Champagne’s most iconic single-vineyard wines, drawn from a legendary, walled hillside that has defined the house’s style for generations. This is a profound, vinous Champagne crafted in an Extra Brut style that highlights precision, chalky minerality and the pure character of its exceptional terroir. The 2014 vintage brings a particularly refined, classical profile, combining depth and tension with outstanding aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Clos des Goisses shows a luminous, golden straw color with a fine, persistent mousse that hints at its concentration and long lees aging. The nose is complex and expressive, opening with notes of ripe citrus, white peach and Mirabelle plum, followed by layers of brioche, toasted hazelnut, acacia blossom and a distinct chalky, marine-like minerality. Subtle hints of spice and smoke emerge with air, adding further nuance.
On the palate, this Champagne is powerful yet supremely focused, with a firm backbone of acidity carrying flavors of citrus zest, stone fruit, green pear and crushed chalk. The texture is dense and vinous, almost Burgundian in its breadth, balanced by the linear drive of the Extra Brut dosage. Nuances of toasted almond, brioche, light honey and saline notes carry through to a very long, precise finish. Still youthful in 2014 form, this Clos des Goisses has the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully for 15–25 years or more in a good cellar, gaining additional layers of truffle, dried fruit and pastry complexity over time.
Production
Clos des Goisses comes from a single, 5.5-hectare walled vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, one of Champagne’s steepest and warmest south-facing slopes, with gradients up to 45 degrees. The vineyard’s chalk-rich soils, excellent exposure and sheltered microclimate consistently produce some of the ripest grapes in the region, primarily Pinot Noir with a portion of Chardonnay. All fruit is hand-harvested at optimal maturity due to the steep terrain and the need for careful selection. In the cellar, Philipponnat traditionally vinifies a significant part of the must in oak barrels to build texture and complexity, and typically blocks malolactic fermentation to preserve tension and freshness. The wine is then aged for many years on its lees in bottle, with a very low Extra Brut dosage that allows the character of Clos des Goisses and the 2014 vintage to speak clearly.
Food & Serving
The 2014 Clos des Goisses is a gastronomic Champagne that shines at the table. It pairs beautifully with luxurious seafood dishes such as lobster, turbot, scallops, or langoustines, as well as refined poultry preparations like roast chicken or guinea fowl with morels or truffle. It also works superbly with aged hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gruyère, Parmesan) and delicate veal or pork dishes with creamy sauces. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, in a generous white wine or Champagne glass to allow the aromas to expand. Young bottles can benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to open fully, especially if served alongside complex dishes.
Producer
Philipponnat is a historic Champagne house with roots dating back to 1522, making it one of the region’s oldest family-associated producers. Based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the house is renowned for its deep connection to Pinot Noir and for pioneering the concept of terroir-driven, single-vineyard prestige Champagne through Clos des Goisses, first bottled as a separate cuvée in the 1930s. Over the years, Philipponnat has earned a reputation among collectors and sommeliers for producing powerful, gastronomic Champagnes that bridge the worlds of fine wine and fine dining. Today, as part of the Lanson-BCC group yet still very much guided by family heritage, Philipponnat remains a benchmark for characterful, age-worthy Champagne from some of the region’s most privileged sites.
