Description

The 2014 Borgogno Barolo Cannubi DOCG is a textbook example of why Cannubi is considered the most revered cru in Barolo. Crafted in a resolutely traditional style from 100% Nebbiolo, it combines power, structure and astonishing finesse in a wine built for long-term cellaring. This single-vineyard Barolo comes from one of Piemonte’s oldest and most respected estates, whose roots in the region date back to the 18th century and whose reputation is deeply tied to the classic expression of Barolo.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Cannubi shows a deep garnet core with brick-orange reflections at the rim, a classic visual hallmark of traditionally made Barolo. The bouquet is lifted and complex, offering layers of dried rose petals, violet, savory herbs, and hints of tar, alongside darker tones of black cherry, plum and a delicate trace of leather and spice. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, firmly structured Barolo that remains elegant rather than heavy. The tannins are powerful yet refined, providing a tightly woven frame around flavors of ripe dark berries, licorice, balsamic notes and dried herbs. Subtle earthy and mineral undertones recall Cannubi’s famous hillside soils. Still youthful in its evolution, the 2014 has many years ahead of it; with proper cellaring, it can easily develop and improve over 20–30 years, gaining further tertiary complexity and silkier texture over time.

Production
Cannubi is one of Barolo’s most historic and esteemed vineyards, a south to southeast-facing ridge with a unique mix of Tortonian and Helvetian marl that yields wines of both structure and elegance. Borgogno farms its parcels sustainably, respecting biodiversity and avoiding chemical shortcuts, and all fruit is harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection in the vineyard. True to the estate’s traditional philosophy, the Nebbiolo grapes are vinified with long macerations and fermentation in large vessels, followed by an extended maturation of about four years in large 6,000-liter Slavonian oak casks. After cask aging, the wine rests an additional six months in bottle before release, allowing the components to knit together and the distinctive Cannubi character to emerge clearly.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a superb partner for richly flavored dishes and classic northern Italian cuisine. Serve it alongside braised beef or veal, osso buco, game birds, truffle-infused dishes, aged hard cheeses (such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino), and hearty mushroom or wild boar ragùs over fresh pasta. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften; older bottles may require a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment.

Producer
Founded in 1761, Borgogno is widely regarded as one of the oldest and most historically important wineries in Piemonte. Based in the heart of Barolo, the estate has long been a benchmark for traditionally crafted Nebbiolo, producing wines that are celebrated for their authenticity, structure and remarkable longevity. With 13 hectares of vineyards—9 of them planted to Nebbiolo—and holdings in renowned crus such as Cannubi, Liste and Fossati, Borgogno has played a vital role in defining the classic Barolo style. The winery is firmly committed to sustainable practices and continues to earn international recognition for its steadfast adherence to time-honored methods and its ability to produce age-worthy, terroir-driven wines vintage after vintage.
