Description

The 2013 Tenuta di Biserno Lodovico is the flagship red from this acclaimed Tuscan coastal estate, crafted in tiny quantities from the very best Bordeaux varieties. Conceived by Lodovico and Piero Antinori, it channels the power and precision of Bolgheri-style Super Tuscans into a wine of remarkable depth, poise and longevity. Produced only in exceptional vintages and awarded top scores from the likes of Parker, James Suckling and Gambero Rosso, Lodovico is one of the most coveted wines from coastal Tuscany.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Lodovico shows a deep, radiant ruby core with subtle garnet reflections at the rim, signalling both concentration and the first hints of graceful evolution. After decanting, the bouquet quickly blossoms into an expansive, layered nose: wild Mediterranean herbs and dried flowers are intertwined with dark chocolate, black licorice, black cherries, cassis and sweet baking spices, all framed by fine French oak. On the palate, this is plush, dense and beautifully structured, with a rich core of blackcurrant, black cherry and dark forest berries. The fruit is supported by vibrant, refreshing acidity and very ripe, polished tannins that give the wine both power and elegance. Notes of graphite, cocoa, tobacco and spice linger on a long, seamless finish that feels both intense and refined. While already highly expressive, the 2013 Lodovico has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 15–20+ years from vintage, gaining further complexity and velvety texture with time in the cellar.

Production
Lodovico is sourced from a dedicated six-hectare plot within the larger Bellaria vineyard in Bibbona, on Tuscany’s maritime coast, just north of Bolgheri. The vineyards are densely planted (around 6,500 vines per hectare) with classic Bordeaux varieties—Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot—on soils and exposures that have proven particularly suited to producing rare, high-quality fruit, especially Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented in stainless steel tanks over 3–4 weeks at controlled temperatures of around 28°C to extract color, aroma and fine tannins. Malolactic fermentation takes place predominantly in oak (around 80%), with the remainder in stainless steel, adding creaminess and complexity. The wine is then matured for approximately 16 months in 100% new French oak barriques, followed by about one year of bottle aging before release, and is produced only in top vintages in highly limited quantities (around 8,000 bottles).

Food & Serving
This is a powerful, complex Tuscan red best matched with equally refined and flavorful dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef short ribs, game such as venison, or rich dishes featuring truffles and wild mushrooms. Aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature pecorino also make superb partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in generous Bordeaux-style glasses. Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 1–2 hours for a young or recently released bottle, and around 30–60 minutes for a more mature bottle—to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open.

Producer
Tenuta di Biserno was founded by brothers Lodovico and Piero Antinori, scions of the historic Antinori family whose winemaking roots in Tuscany date back over six centuries. Set in Bibbona, adjacent to the famed Bolgheri area, the estate was conceived as a dedicated home for world-class Bordeaux blends from the Tuscan coast, complementing Lodovico Antinori’s pioneering work with Super Tuscan wines. In a relatively short time, Tenuta di Biserno has become one of the most prestigious names in the region, with Lodovico as its absolute pinnacle—produced only in the finest vintages and consistently achieving some of the highest critical accolades in coastal Tuscany, including 3 Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso and scores in the high 90s from leading international critics.
