Description

The 2013 Parusso Barolo Riserva Bussia Munie is a powerful, single-vineyard Barolo from one of Monforte d’Alba’s most prestigious crus. Crafted only in top vintages and aged extensively before release, this Riserva shows Nebbiolo at its most complex and ageworthy. It’s a wine that captures both the depth of the Bussia hillside and the modern, precise touch that has made Parusso a reference point in Barolo.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Bussia Munie Riserva shows a deep garnet core with brick-orange reflections at the rim, already hinting at its evolution and complexity. The nose is intense and layered: rose petals, dried violets, and potpourri unfold alongside red cherry, dried strawberry, and blood orange. With air, more savoury and tertiary notes emerge—tar, leather, sweet tobacco, cedar, liquorice, and a subtle truffle earthiness that speaks clearly of Barolo. On the palate, this is structured and authoritative yet remarkably refined. The 2013 vintage brings a classic tension: bright, persistent acidity and firm, polished tannins frame flavours of sour cherry, raspberry, dried plum, and pomegranate, supported by notes of underbrush, anise, dark cocoa, and spice from well-integrated oak. The finish is long, savoury and saline, with lingering floral and balsamic tones. Still youthful for a Riserva, it has the backbone to evolve beautifully for another 10–15 years or more, gaining further nuance and tertiary complexity with careful cellaring.

Production
Sourced from the prized Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba, the Munie vineyard sits on steep, well-drained slopes with a mix of clay-limestone and marl, giving Nebbiolo both power and aromatic lift. Parusso farms these old vines with meticulous attention, harvesting by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and strict fruit selection. In the cellar, whole clusters and intact berries are used to enhance aromatics and complexity, followed by a long, gentle maceration to extract fine tannins rather than harshness. The wine is then aged for an extended period in small oak barrels and in bottle as required for Barolo Riserva, allowing the structure to soften and the aromatics to knit into the layered, textural style that defines Parusso’s top wines.

Food & Serving
This Barolo Riserva is an outstanding partner for rich, savoury dishes—think braised beef short ribs, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shank, or classic Piemontese brasato al Barolo. It also shines with game birds, truffle risotto, porcini tagliatelle, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, and hard alpine cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stems to allow the bouquet to fully express itself. Decant for 1–2 hours if drinking now to help the tannins relax and the more delicate floral and spice notes emerge; older bottles will need gentler, shorter decanting primarily to remove sediment.

Producer
The Parusso estate, based in Monforte d’Alba, is a family-run winery that has steadily become one of the most respected names in Barolo. Founded in the early 20th century and now led by siblings Marco and Tiziana Parusso, the estate is known for combining meticulous vineyard work with a thoughtful, modern approach in the cellar. Their holdings in top sites such as Bussia allow them to craft expressive, terroir-driven Barolo that balances richness with precision. Parusso has garnered critical acclaim for its elegant, ageworthy Nebbiolo wines, helping to shape the contemporary identity of Barolo while remaining deeply rooted in the traditions of the Langhe.
