Description
The 2013 Dominio de Atauta San Juan is a refined, single-vineyard expression of Ribera del Duero that showcases both the power and elegance of high-altitude Tempranillo. Crafted from old-vine Tinto Fino, it captures the cool, extended 2013 growing season in a wine of depth, freshness and poise. This bottling stands out for its combination of concentrated fruit, mineral tension and polished structure, hallmarks of Dominio de Atauta’s work in the remote, chalk-rich valley of Soria.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 San Juan shows a deep, vivid ruby hue with garnet hints at the rim, signaling both intensity and the early stages of graceful evolution. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe blackberries and dark cherries mingle with notes of violet, dried herbs, cocoa, graphite and a delicate frame of cedar, spice and vanilla from French oak.
On the palate, this is a structured yet supple Ribera, with a core of dark berry fruit, plum and black cherry wrapped in fine-grained, velvety tannins. There is a distinct mineral edge—a chalky, almost saline precision—that keeps the generous fruit in balance, alongside a lively, well-integrated acidity from the cool 2013 vintage. Subtle nuances of tobacco leaf, licorice and sweet baking spices emerge on the long, persistent finish. Already harmonious, it has the concentration, acidity and tannic backbone to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining additional complexity and tertiary notes with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Dominio de Atauta’s San Juan 2013 come from old Tinto Fino vines, many several decades old and some exceeding a century, rooted in the calcareous, poor soils of a high-altitude valley (around 850–1,000 meters) in eastern Ribera del Duero. The combination of limestone-rich subsoils, marked diurnal temperature swings and a continental climate with hot days and cold nights yields small, intensely flavored berries. Vineyard work is meticulous and typically low-intervention, with very low yields and selective hand harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters are picked. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with careful temperature control to preserve aromatic purity and terroir expression, followed by aging for around 16 months in French oak barrels. This élevage polishes the tannins and adds subtle spice and toast, while respecting the character of the fruit and the mineral signature of the site.
Food & Serving
This structured yet refined Ribera del Duero pairs beautifully with flavorful, protein-rich dishes such as grilled or roast lamb, ribeye steak, slow-braised beef cheeks, Iberian pork, or game like venison and wild boar. It also works well with hard, aged cheeses (Manchego curado, aged Comté), mushroom-based dishes and deeply flavored stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully, soften the tannins and reveal the full spectrum of fruit, spice and mineral notes, especially if enjoyed in its youth.
Producer
Dominio de Atauta is a benchmark estate in the far eastern part of Ribera del Duero, in the remote Atauta valley in Soria, where some of Spain’s oldest and most singular Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) vineyards are found. Established in the early 2000s, the winery set out to recover and showcase a patchwork of ancient, often pre-phylloxera parcels planted at high altitude on limestone-rich soils. Its focus on low yields, precise viticulture and terroir-driven, parcel-specific wines has helped redefine what Ribera del Duero can be, emphasizing finesse, freshness and mineral tension over sheer power. Dominio de Atauta is now widely regarded as one of the key producers in the region, with numerous high scores and critical acclaim for its ability to translate the unique character of its old vines and cool, high-altitude sites into distinctive, ageworthy wines.
