Description

2013 Dominio de Atauta La Roza is a characterful and elegant red wine from one of Ribera del Duero’s most distinctive high‑altitude valleys. Crafted from old‑vine Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), it marries power with precision, offering a refined expression of this famed Spanish region. The challenging yet long and slow 2013 growing season has produced a wine of notable finesse, structure and age‑worthiness, underlining the historic potential of Atauta’s ancient vineyards.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Roza 2013 shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with garnet hues beginning to emerge at the rim, reflecting its patient evolution in bottle. The nose is intense and layered, opening with ripe blackberries and dark cherries, followed by notes of violets, dried flowers, sweet spice and vanilla from its time in French oak. Subtle hints of cocoa, liquorice and graphite add further complexity as it breathes. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet poised, with a core of concentrated black fruit wrapped in finely polished, velvety tannins. The limestone terroir lends a vibrant, balancing acidity and a mineral edge that keeps the wine fresh and focused. Flavours of ripe plum, black cherry and wild berries are intertwined with touches of tobacco, baking spice and a gentle smokiness. The finish is long, harmonious and persistent. Enjoyable now with some air, this 2013 still has excellent aging potential, with at least 5–8 more years of development ahead for those who appreciate more tertiary, savoury nuances.

Production
La Roza 2013 comes from the remote Atauta Valley in eastern Ribera del Duero, where vineyards sit at 850–1000 metres above sea level on predominantly limestone‑rich soils with sandy and clay components. The climate is continental, marked by hot summers, cold winters and strong diurnal temperature swings, which help preserve acidity and build aromatic intensity. The wine is made from 100% Tinto Fino sourced from very old vines, some over 100 years of age, which yield small quantities of highly concentrated grapes. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled vats to protect aromatics and structure, followed by 16 months of maturation in French oak barrels, which adds complexity and texture without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This 2013 La Roza is an excellent match for richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, slow‑braised beef cheeks, duck confit, or Iberico pork. It also pairs beautifully with hard aged cheeses, charcuterie, wild mushroom dishes and herb‑roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 60–90 minutes is recommended to fully release its layered aromas and soften the structure, especially if enjoyed in its youth or shortly after opening.

Producer
Dominio de Atauta is a highly regarded estate located in the secluded Atauta Valley in the Soria subzone of Ribera del Duero, an area celebrated for its extreme altitude and remarkably old vineyards. The winery has built its reputation on preserving and showcasing some of the region’s oldest Tinto Fino vines, many of them pre‑phylloxera and over a century old, rooted deep in poor, limestone‑dominated soils. Working parcel by parcel, Dominio de Atauta has been instrumental in revealing the distinct character of this cooler, eastern corner of Ribera del Duero, producing wines that are both powerful and finely etched. The estate is widely praised by critics and wine lovers alike for its commitment to low yields, precise viticulture and terroir‑driven, age‑worthy reds that stand among the most distinctive in the region.
