Description

The 2013 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is a powerful, deeply structured expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most revered domaines. Sourced from the prestigious Bonnes Mares vineyard straddling Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, it marries aromatic finesse with a distinctly muscular frame. In the more classical, cooler 2013 vintage, this Grand Cru shows exceptional precision, tension and aging potential, making it a compelling choice for serious collectors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is dark and intense for Pinot Noir, showing a deep ruby to garnet core with a youthful sheen at the rim. The nose is immediately complex and beguiling, with lifted aromas of violets and blue flowers wrapped around layers of blueberry, blackberry and black cherry, supported by hints of cold earth, fine spice, graphite and a suggestion of smoked tea from the refined oak. On the palate, this is the most structured and ‘masculine’ wine in the Vogüé range: concentrated, firmly framed and yet texturally polished. Dark fruit—blueberries, black cherries and wild berries—intertwines with notes of cloves, star anise, cocoa nib and a subtle mineral edge from the red clay soils. The 35% new French oak is seamlessly integrated, adding gentle toast and sweetness of spice without overshadowing the fruit. Tannins are fine but authoritative, and the bright, linear acidity of the 2013 vintage gives the wine lift and precision. While already compelling with air, this Bonnes Mares is built for the long haul and should evolve beautifully for 15–25 years from vintage, gaining further complexity, sous-bois, truffle and gamey nuances with time in bottle.

Production
The grapes for this Grand Cru come from approximately 2.7 hectares of Bonnes Mares, predominantly on red clay soils that naturally yield a more robust and structured style of Pinot Noir. Located at the junction of Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, the vineyard benefits from a mix of limestone and clay-marl underpinnings that confer both aromatic lift and depth of flavour. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé farms these plots with meticulous attention to vine health and terroir expression, harvesting entirely by hand and carrying out rigorous sorting to ensure only perfect fruit is used. Fermentation typically takes place in traditional open wooden vats, allowing for gentle extraction of color, aroma and tannin. The wine is then aged for an extended period—around 18–24 months—in French oak barrels, with about 35% new oak in this cuvée, striking a balance between structural support and purity of fruit.

Food & Serving
This Bonnes Mares Grand Cru calls for refined yet richly flavoured cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb or beef, venison, pigeon or other game birds, as well as dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffle, and slow-braised meats. Earthy accompaniments—root vegetables, celeriac purée, or lentils—underscore its mineral and savory dimensions, while well-aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gruyère make a superb match. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F), ideally after 1–2 hours in a decanter in its youth to allow the bouquet and structure to unfurl. Older bottles (10+ years) should be decanted more gently and closer to serving to preserve their delicate, evolved aromatics.

Producer
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is one of the legendary names of Burgundy, with roots in Chambolle-Musigny dating back to the mid-15th century. Today, the estate is best known as the historic benchmark of the Musigny Grand Cru, where it owns the majority of the vineyard, including the tiny, near-mythical parcel of Chardonnay that yields one of the rarest white Grand Crus in Burgundy. The domaine’s holdings, which also encompass prime parcels in Bonnes Mares and other top sites, are farmed with a deep respect for traditional methods and minimal intervention, allowing each terroir to speak clearly. Hand harvesting, careful sorting, fermentation in open wooden vats and extended élevage in French oak have long underpinned the estate’s style: wines of purity, depth and significant longevity. Widely regarded as a reference-point producer for Chambolle-Musigny and a cornerstone of Côte de Nuits excellence, Comte de Vogüé’s bottles are coveted by collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts worldwide.
