Description
The 2013 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is one of the Rhône Valley’s true cult wines, produced only in the finest vintages and in extremely limited quantities. Crafted primarily from very old-vine Mourvèdre, this cuvée represents the most powerful and age-worthy expression of Beaucastel’s legendary terroir. Named in tribute to Jacques Perrin, the visionary who elevated the estate to global renown, it stands as a benchmark for profound, long-lived Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Hommage à Jacques Perrin shows a deep black-ruby core with an almost opaque intensity, framed by a narrow, vibrant garnet rim. The nose is immediately complex and layered, opening with blackberries, blackcurrants and blue fruit, followed by wild herbs, forest floor, truffle, leather and a distinct stony, mineral edge. With air, nuances of smoked meat, dark spices, licorice and dried violets emerge, underscoring the wine’s concentration and depth.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense and remarkably structured, with an almost inky richness that remains poised and vibrant. The Mourvèdre core brings dark, savory fruit and gamey, earthy notes, while Grenache adds juiciness and warmth and Syrah provides spice and lift; Counoise contributes freshness and complexity on the finish. Firm, serious tannins are beautifully woven into the fruit, giving the wine an authoritative grip without harshness. The finish is very long, mineral and persistent, with echoes of black fruit, garrigue and subtle leather. Still youthful and tightly coiled, this 2013 has a very long life ahead of it and can comfortably age into 2050 and beyond, rewarding patience with ever-greater nuance and tertiary complexity.
Production
The Hommage à Jacques Perrin is sourced from some of Beaucastel’s oldest parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, rooted in the estate’s classic terroir of large rolled pebbles (galets roulés) over clay and sand. These stones store heat during the day and release it at night, helping the grapes achieve perfect ripeness while preserving freshness. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, with an emphasis on living soils and biodiversity, and the gnarled old vines are trained in the traditional ‘gobelet’ bush-vine style. Yields are kept extremely low, and all grapes—60% Mourvèdre, around 20% Grenache, a significant proportion of Syrah, and a small percentage of Counoise—are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted. Vinification typically involves separate fermentations by grape variety, often with a proportion of whole clusters, followed by long macerations to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in a combination of large oak foudres and smaller barrels, allowing it to develop its profound structure and layered personality while maintaining purity of fruit and a strong sense of place.
Food & Serving
This is a commanding, contemplative red that shines alongside equally noble cuisine: think slow-braised lamb shank, roast venison, hare à la royale, game birds, richly sauced beef dishes, or truffle-laced preparations featuring wild mushrooms. Aged hard cheeses such as Comté, old Gouda or mature Pecorino can also make superb partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both structure and aromatic complexity. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to soften the tannins and let the bouquet unfurl; for well-cellared bottles with some age, a gentle 1–2 hour decant is sufficient, taking care when handling any sediment.
Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the most historic and revered estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with roots dating back to the early 17th century. The Perrin family took the helm in the early 1900s and, over five generations, has transformed Beaucastel into a global reference point for Rhône wines, known for its pioneering commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture long before these practices were widely adopted. The estate is distinctive in its devotion to all 13 permitted Châteauneuf-du-Pape grape varieties and its particularly high proportion of Mourvèdre, which lends structure, longevity and a signature earthy, gamey complexity. Beyond Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Perrins have extended their influence across the southern Rhône—Ventoux, Luberon, Gigondas, Vinsobres, Rasteau, Vacqueyras and more—consistently producing characterful wines that express their individual terroirs. The Hommage à Jacques Perrin sits at the very top of this portfolio and is widely regarded as one of the greatest red wines of the Rhône, regularly earning top scores and a place in serious collectors’ cellars around the world.
