Description
The 2013 Champagne Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill Magnum is a grand, cellar-worthy expression of one of Champagne’s most revered prestige cuvées. Bottled in magnum for an even slower, more graceful evolution, it captures the power, depth and quiet refinement that defined Sir Winston himself. Crafted only in the finest vintages and in very limited quantities, this is a benchmark collectors’ Champagne from one of the region’s most respected houses. Inspired by Pol Roger’s long friendship with Sir Winston Churchill, this cuvée is traditionally Pinot Noir-dominant, sourced exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards prized for structure and longevity. The exact blend remains a closely guarded secret, but the style is unmistakable: generous, muscular and yet impeccably balanced, with extended aging in Pol Roger’s famously deep, cool cellars imparting complexity and finesse. First released in 1984 (vintage 1975), Sir Winston Churchill has since become one of Champagne’s most coveted and ageworthy wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Sir Winston Churchill shows a luminous, pale gold hue with extremely fine, persistent bubbles that form a delicate, creamy mousse—the visual hallmark of long lees aging. The nose opens slowly and thoughtfully, revealing layers of toasted brioche, hazelnut and freshly baked patisserie, followed by ripe citrus, orchard fruits and hints of dried flowers and chalky minerality. With air, more savoury nuances emerge: subtle smoke, nougat and a touch of spice.
On the palate, this Champagne is both authoritative and elegant. The attack is powerful yet measured, with a core of ripe pear, golden apple and Meyer lemon framed by roasted nuts, biscuit and a gentle saline edge. The texture is creamy and expansive, carried by vibrant, perfectly integrated acidity that keeps everything fresh and focused. The finish is long, dry and precise, echoing with citrus zest, toasted almond and a chalky, mineral snap. In magnum format, the 2013 vintage offers excellent aging potential—easily 15–20 years from release and likely longer, gaining even more complexity, truffle, honey and brioche notes over time while retaining its spine of freshness.
Production
Pol Roger’s Sir Winston Churchill cuvée is sourced from a selection of Grand Cru vineyards in Champagne, predominantly in Pinot Noir villages historically favored by the Churchill family and by the house for their structure and depth, with complementary Chardonnay from top sites to bring finesse and tension. These vineyards sit on classic Champagne chalk and limestone soils, which lend both a pronounced mineral character and the capacity for long aging. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and rigorously sorted to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve purity and precision, followed by an exceptionally long period of lees aging—often close to a decade—in Pol Roger’s famously deep, cool cellars in Épernay. This extended maturation, combined with a carefully judged dosage, shapes the cuvée’s signature combination of richness, fine texture and remarkable longevity, further enhanced here by the magnum’s slower, more harmonious evolution.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Champagne designed for the table rather than simple aperitif sipping. It pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as lobster with butter or citrus, scallops in a delicate cream or beurre blanc, turbot or sole, and line-caught sea bass. It also complements rich poultry—think Bresse chicken with morels, veal sweetbreads, or truffled dishes—as well as aged Comté, Parmesan or a well-curated selection of hard cheeses. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the full aromatic spectrum to unfold. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving and pouring into generous white wine or Champagne glasses rather than narrow flutes will help reveal its depth and complexity, especially in its youth.
Producer
Founded in 1849 in Épernay, Pol Roger is one of Champagne’s last great, family-owned houses and a name synonymous with classic, impeccably balanced wines. The house earned a special place in British history and culture through its close relationship with Sir Winston Churchill, who famously favored Pol Roger and contributed to its legendary status in the UK and beyond. Today, Pol Roger is celebrated for its elegant, Pinot Noir–driven style, its rigorous standards in the vineyard and cellar, and its exceptional consistency across vintages. The Sir Winston Churchill cuvée, created as a tribute to the statesman and released only in outstanding years, stands as the house’s crowning achievement and one of the most admired prestige Champagnes in the region.
