Description
The 2013 Champagne Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill is one of the most revered prestige cuvées in Champagne, crafted as a tribute to the house’s most famous devotee. Produced only in the finest vintages and in very limited quantities, it captures the depth, power and refinement that defined Churchill’s preferred style of Champagne. Sourced from Grand Cru vineyards and aged extensively in Pol Roger’s deep, cool cellars, the 2013 vintage is a benchmark bottle for collectors and serious Champagne lovers alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Sir Winston Churchill shows a luminous, pale gold hue with an incredibly fine, persistent mousse that speaks to both long lees aging and meticulous craftsmanship. The nose is expressive yet tightly knit, offering layers of brioche, toasted hazelnut and fresh pastry alongside orchard fruits, Meyer lemon, white flowers and a subtle chalky minerality.
On the palate, this cuvée is broad-shouldered and structured, with the Pinot Noir-led blend giving a powerful core of ripe pear, baked apple and citrus zest, wrapped in notes of almond cream, subtle spice and smoked bread crust. The texture is both creamy and precise, with vibrant acidity and a long, saline, gently smoky finish. Still youthful, the 2013 vintage shows great concentration and tension; it is already superb but will continue to develop tertiary notes of honey, truffle and dried fruits over the next 15–20 years, and likely longer in optimal cellaring conditions.
Production
Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is traditionally dominated by Pinot Noir with a supporting proportion of Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from old-vine parcels in Grand Cru villages historically favored by Churchill and the Pol Roger family. These chalk-rich slopes in the heart of Champagne provide both the firmness and elegance that define the wine’s character. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted before gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve purity and precision, followed by an exceptionally long maturation on the lees in Pol Roger’s famously deep, cool cellars. The 2013 spent many years aging sur latte before disgorgement, with a carefully judged dosage to balance acidity and highlight the vintage’s naturally elegant profile.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Champagne that shines at the table. Pair it with refined dishes such as turbot with beurre blanc, lobster, scallops, roasted chicken with morels, veal in cream sauce, or aged Comté and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Its depth and structure also work beautifully with truffle dishes and rich shellfish preparations. Serve well chilled, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass for maximum expression. For current drinking, gently decanting or pouring into large-bowled white wine or Champagne glasses 20–30 minutes before serving can help open up the complex aromatics.
Producer
Founded in 1849 in Épernay, Pol Roger is one of Champagne’s most respected family-owned houses, celebrated for its consistent quality, classical style and long-lived wines. The bond with Sir Winston Churchill began in the 1940s; he became one of the house’s most loyal admirers, famously declaring, “In victory, deserve it; in defeat, need it.” In 1975, a decade after Churchill’s death, Pol Roger created Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill in his honor, crafting it to reflect the richness, structure and age-worthiness he cherished. Today, Pol Roger holds a prestigious place among the great names of Champagne, with Sir Winston Churchill as its flagship cuvée and a regular feature in top critics’ lists and collectors’ cellars worldwide.
