Description
Bottled in an impressive 3-liter Jeroboam, the 2012 Marqués de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is one of Rioja Alta’s true icons, offered here in a format made for the most memorable tables and cellars. Sourced exclusively from the historic La Plana single vineyard and released only in outstanding vintages, this is the flagship wine of Marqués de Murrieta and a benchmark for ageworthy Spanish reds. The 2012 marks the 56th vintage of Castillo Ygay since 1877 and has earned a perfect 100/100 score, placing it firmly among the greatest Riojas ever produced.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial shows a deep, radiant garnet core with a slight brick-red rim, already hinting at its complexity and slow evolution. The nose is expansive and layered, with aromas of black cherries, ripe plums and wild berries intertwined with notes of dried rose petals, tea leaves, cedar, fine cigar box, and a whisper of Mediterranean herbs and dried flowers. Subtle hints of vanilla, sweet spice and polished wood speak to its long maturation in high-quality oak.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet supremely refined, with an exceptional sense of balance and freshness for such concentration. Dark fruit flavours—black cherry, damson plum and blackberry—are wrapped in nuances of leather, tobacco leaf, graphite, forest floor and delicate savory spice. The tannins are ultra-fine and beautifully integrated, giving a velvety but firm structure that carries the flavour in a long, harmonious finish. Acidity is vibrant, keeping the wine lively and precise, and the aftertaste lingers with notes of cocoa, dried herbs and red fruit. In this 3-liter Jeroboam, the aging potential is outstanding: while already spellbinding on release, it will easily develop for 25–40 years or more, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances with patience.
Production
Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is sourced exclusively from La Plana, a revered single vineyard planted in 1950 and situated on a plateau at the highest point of the Finca Ygay estate in Rioja Alta, at around 485 meters above sea level. The combination of altitude, well-drained soils and a classic Atlantic-influenced climate allows for slow, even ripening and naturally balanced grapes. In 2012, only fruit of exceptional quality was selected, with Tempranillo (81%) and Mazuelo (19%) harvested by hand. Rigorous selection occurs first in the vineyard and again on sorting tables at the winery, ensuring only the finest berries make it into this flagship cuvée. Following fermentation, the Tempranillo matures for 34 months in 225-liter American oak barrels, while the Mazuelo spends 34 months in 225-liter French oak, bringing structure and aromatic lift. After blending, the wine rests an additional 20 months in concrete tanks to harmonize its components before bottling, followed by several years of bottle aging in the bodega’s cellars prior to release. This painstaking, time-intensive process is at the heart of Castillo Ygay’s depth, polish and longevity.
Food & Serving
This is a meditative, contemplative Rioja that shines brightest with refined, slowly cooked dishes. Classic pairings include roasted or braised meats such as beef rib roast with wild mushrooms, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, or suckling pig served with baked tart apples. It also pairs beautifully with game birds like Bresse pigeon, duck, or guinea fowl, as well as aged hard cheeses and truffled dishes that echo its earthy, savory complexity. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to emphasize both freshness and depth. Given its youth and concentration, especially in Jeroboam format, decanting is strongly recommended—allow at least 2–3 hours in a large decanter to let the wine fully open, or even longer if enjoying it in its early years.
