Description

The 2012 Marqués de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is one of Rioja’s true icons, produced only in vintages of exceptional quality. Sourced exclusively from the historic La Plana single vineyard, planted in 1950 at the highest point of Finca Ygay, this wine represents the pinnacle of the estate’s traditional yet finely polished style. The 2012 marks the 56th vintage of Castillo Ygay since 1877 and has already achieved a perfect 100/100 score, underlining its status as one of Spain’s greatest red wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is deep, intense ruby with a garnet rim hinting at its long maturation, yet still remarkably vibrant. The nose is complex and layered: black cherries and ripe plums interweave with notes of dried flowers, tea leaves, cedar wood, and sweet Mediterranean herbs, supported by subtle hints of tobacco, fine spice, and polished oak. On the palate, this is a powerful yet supremely refined Rioja, with great concentration and depth. Dark fruit is framed by silky, ultra-fine tannins and a lively, balancing acidity that keeps the wine fresh and precise. Nuances of leather, cigar box, forest floor and savory herbs emerge with air, leading into a long, harmonious finish that lingers with spice, dried rose petals and mineral notes. While already accessible for those who enjoy structured, classically styled Rioja, its impeccable balance and structure give it outstanding aging potential, easily evolving and gaining complexity over several decades in a good cellar.

Production
The grapes for the 2012 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial come from the La Plana single vineyard, a plateau at 485 meters above sea level in Rioja Alta, at the highest point of Finca Ygay. Planted in 1950, these old vines grow on poor, well-drained soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The blend is 81% Tempranillo and 19% Mazuelo, all harvested by hand. A first selection takes place directly in the vineyard, followed by a second rigorous sorting on tables at the winery so that only the finest bunches make it into the final wine. After fermentation, the Tempranillo spends 34 months in 225-liter American oak barrels, while the Mazuelo matures for 34 months in 225-liter French oak. The components are then blended and kept a further 20 months in concrete tanks before bottling. Finally, the wine rests in bottle for several years before release, ensuring that it is both complex and beautifully integrated on the market.

Food & Serving
This is a contemplative, “meditation” wine that shines alongside refined, slow-cooked dishes. It pairs superbly with roast or braised game birds such as Bresse pigeon, dry-aged or roasted beef with wild mushrooms, or suckling pig with baked tart apples; rich lamb dishes and mature hard cheeses also work wonderfully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large-bowled glasses to let the aromatics unfold. Decanting is highly recommended—give it at least 1–2 hours if drinking now to fully express its layers; older bottles, in time, may need more gentle, shorter decanting to preserve their delicacy.

Producer
Marqués de Murrieta is one of Rioja’s foundational estates, established in 1852 and widely credited with helping shape the classic style that made the region famous. Located at Finca Ygay in Rioja Alta, the winery has long championed estate-grown fruit, meticulous vineyard work and extended barrel aging, setting a benchmark for traditional yet elegant Rioja. Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is the flagship wine of the house, produced only in top vintages and released after long maturation. Over the years, Marqués de Murrieta has earned international acclaim and numerous high scores, including multiple wines recognized among the world’s best, reinforcing its status as a reference point not only in Rioja but in the global fine wine landscape.

Bold, refined, and truly iconic, this 2012 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial gave me one of my best Rioja experiences. Aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, cedar, leather, and warm spice unfold beautifully. On the palate, it is elegant, structured, and perfectly balanced, with silky tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, complex finish. A memorable wine that shows the true greatness of classic Rioja.
