Description
The 2012 Dominio de Atauta Valdegatiles is a single-vineyard, old-vine Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) from one of Ribera del Duero’s most singular high-altitude valleys. Sourced from tiny, ancient parcels and bottled in extremely limited quantities, it represents the most refined and site-specific expression of the Atauta landscape. This cuvée stands out for its combination of depth, freshness and finely sculpted power, making it a benchmark wine for the eastern reaches of Ribera del Duero.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Valdegatiles shows an inky, very deep cherry color with a dense, almost opaque core and a narrow, bright ruby rim. The nose is intensely perfumed with pure red fruit—wild cherry, red currant and raspberry—layered with subtle notes of dried herbs, sweet spices, graphite and a hint of fine cedar from its élevage in French oak.
On the palate, the wine is both powerful and poised, driven by concentrated red fruit that remains vivid from attack through the very long finish. The clay-rich soils show in the wine’s structure: broad, mouth-filling tannins that are ripe yet firm, wrapped around a core of fresh acidity that keeps everything lifted and energetic. The finish is long, savory and textural, with lingering red fruit, spice and mineral notes. Still very much in its prime, the 2012 has the structure and balance to continue evolving gracefully for many more years in bottle, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances with time.
Production
Valdegatiles is a 1.09-hectare site divided into nine micro-parcels planted with approximately 120-year-old Tinto Fino vines in the remote Atauta Valley, in the eastern part of Ribera del Duero at close to 1,000 meters altitude. This high elevation, combined with poor, clay-rich soils over calcareous subsoils, yields naturally low crops of small, intensely flavored berries. Harvest is done entirely by hand, followed by a strict double selection of bunches and individual berries. The must is moved to tank by gravity into a 1,000-liter stainless steel fermenter, where it undergoes a cold maceration of six days at under 10ºC with gentle punch-downs twice daily. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts over about 11 days, with the frequency of punch-downs adjusted to the needs of the vintage, followed by a further 13-day maceration on the skins to fine-tune structure. Malolactic fermentation and aging occur in French oak barrels (around 20% new, 80% second use) over 16 months, with only 1,515 bottles ultimately produced.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Ribera del Duero that pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank, roasted suckling pig, venison stews, dry-aged ribeye or Iberian pork presa. It also works wonderfully with hearty mushroom ragouts, truffled dishes and mature hard cheeses such as Manchego or aged Comté. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to fully open and integrate its fruit, oak and mineral components.
Producer
Dominio de Atauta was born from importer Miguel Sánchez’s discovery of the secluded Atauta Valley, a forgotten enclave in eastern Ribera del Duero dotted with ancient vineyards, centuries-old underground cellars and even medieval stone presses. Long considered marginal due to its altitude and harsh climate, the area revealed extraordinary potential once the neglected plots were revived. Today, Dominio de Atauta is recognized as one of the region’s most terroir-driven and meticulous producers, working with ungrafted, very old Tinto Fino vines—many over a century old—under strict organic practices. Their micro-parcel approach, low yields and careful, gravity-led winemaking have placed their wines, including Valdegatiles, among the most highly regarded Tempranillo-based wines not only in Spain but on the world stage.
