Description

The 2012 Dominio de Atauta Llanos del Almendro is one of the crown jewels of Ribera del Duero’s remote eastern reaches, crafted from some of the region’s oldest Tinto Fino vines. Sourced from a tiny 1.39-hectare parcel divided into 19 micro-plots, this wine captures the raw intensity of high-altitude terroir at nearly 1,000 meters. It stands out for its remarkable concentration, elegance, and a complexity that has made Atauta’s single-vineyard bottlings some of the most talked-about Tempranillos in Spain and beyond.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Llanos del Almendro shows a deep Bigarreau cherry hue with a dense core and a slightly evolved rim, reflecting both its maturity and concentration. The nose is intensely expressive and layered: ripe red and black berries, wild cherry and blackberry, intermingle with notes of black licorice, balsamic tones, dried herbs, and a subtle hint of bitter almond. With air, you may also find violet, graphite, and a fine, savory minerality that speaks clearly of its high-altitude origin. On the palate, this is a powerful yet supremely polished Ribera del Duero. The attack is silky and elegant, with satin-textured tannins wrapped around a core of ripe black fruit, morello cherry, and plum. Those balsamic and licorice notes reappear on the mid-palate, adding depth, while the touch of bitter almond lends a refined, slightly saline twist. The acidity is vibrant for a Tempranillo from Ribera, giving the wine great lift and freshness and carrying it through to a very long, persistent finish. Now well into its drinking window, this 2012 still has the structure and balance to evolve further; expect it to drink beautifully now and over the next 5–8 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and truffle with additional cellaring.

Production
Llanos del Almendro is a single-vineyard wine from the Atauta valley in the eastern part of Ribera del Duero, an area long considered challenging due to its elevation close to 1,000 meters and its extreme climate. The vineyard comprises just 1.39 hectares divided into 19 tiny micro-parcels, planted with very old Tinto Fino vines, many around 140 years of age, rooted in poor, limestone-rich soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Farming is strictly organic, with meticulous work in each parcel to preserve the character of these ancient vines. Harvest is done entirely by hand, with a double selection of bunches and individual grapes before they are moved by gravity into a 1,000-liter stainless steel tank. A seven-day cold maceration below 10ºC precedes fermentation with indigenous yeasts, with gentle punch-downs adjusted to the needs of the must. Alcoholic fermentation lasts about 12 days at a maximum temperature of 27ºC, followed by an additional 14 days of post-fermentation maceration to fine-tune structure and extraction. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages for 16 months in second-use French oak barrels, followed by around five months on its lees, allowing the oak to polish rather than dominate the wine and preserving the purity of fruit and terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, contemplative red that shines alongside refined, flavorful dishes. Think roasted or grilled lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef cheeks, venison, or Iberico pork loin as ideal partners. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Manchego, Comté, or Pecorino, as well as dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffles, or rich reductions. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to show its full aromatic range. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open and to soften the tannins, especially if enjoyed on the younger side of its drinking window.

Producer
Dominio de Atauta is a pioneering estate in the forgotten eastern end of Ribera del Duero, in the Atauta valley of Soria. When wine importer Miguel Sánchez first arrived here, he discovered a near-abandoned viticultural treasure: centuries-old underground cellars, stone presses from the 13th century, and a patchwork of ancient, low-yielding vines—some up to 160 years old. Recognizing the potential of this high, harsh landscape, he and his team set about restoring the vineyards and reviving traditional practices with a modern, quality-focused approach. Today, Dominio de Atauta is regarded as one of the key references for old-vine Tinto Fino in Spain, known for its strictly organic farming, micro-parcel vinifications, and terroir-driven wines that regularly earn international acclaim. Their single-vineyard bottlings, like Llanos del Almendro, have helped redefine the reputation of Ribera del Duero’s eastern reaches and demonstrate just how profound Tempranillo can be when matched with exceptional sites and thoughtful, precise winemaking.
