Description
The 2012 Domaine Leroy Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Narbantons 1er Cru is a rare and captivating red Burgundy from one of the most revered names in the region. Sourced from the premier cru vineyard Les Narbantons in Savigny-lès-Beaune, this wine combines the finesse of Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir with the intensity and depth that characterize Domaine Leroy’s meticulous approach. The 2012 vintage has developed beautifully, now offering a complex, mature expression that remains vibrant and full of life.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Les Narbantons shows a luminous, translucent ruby core that has begun to take on subtle garnet hues with bottle age. The nose is strikingly pure and detailed, with layers of wild red berries, black cherry, and pomegranate wrapped in notes of rose petal, dried violets, and underbrush. Hints of fine spice, forest floor, tea leaf, and a delicate mineral edge add complexity as the wine opens in the glass.
On the palate, this premier cru is both silky and structured, with an effortless concentration that never feels heavy. Red and dark cherry fruit interplays with cranberry and raspberry, supported by ultra-fine, chalky tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Notes of truffle, subtle game, and savory herbs emerge on the long, resonant finish, showing the hallmark complexity of mature Burgundy. The 2012 is drinking beautifully now, yet still has the structure and balance to evolve further over the next 5–8 years, gaining even more nuance with careful cellaring.
Production
Les Narbantons is a well-exposed premier cru vineyard in Savigny-lès-Beaune, known for its clay-limestone soils that give Pinot Noir both aromatic lift and a refined, mineral backbone. Domaine Leroy farms biodynamically with an almost obsessive attention to detail, maintaining very low yields through severe pruning and rigorous selection in the vineyard. Harvest is done entirely by hand, with only the healthiest, perfectly ripe bunches making it to the cuverie. Vinification is gentle and traditional, allowing native yeasts to drive fermentation and favoring minimal intervention to preserve terroir expression. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels, with a careful élevage that brings texture and complexity without overshadowing the purity of the fruit or the character of the site.
Food & Serving
This refined Burgundy pairs beautifully with elegant, nuanced dishes that echo its finesse rather than overpower it. Think roast duck with cherries, herb-crusted rack of lamb, veal tenderloin, or game birds such as pigeon or quail. It also works wonderfully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and aged but not overly powerful cheeses like Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and delicate texture. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine fully express its bouquet, especially if opened on the younger side of its drinking window, but older bottles should be handled carefully to preserve their mature nuances.
Producer
Domaine Leroy is one of Burgundy’s most iconic and sought-after producers, founded by Lalou Bize-Leroy after her long tenure as co-manager and major shareholder of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Based in the Côte d’Or, the domaine has become a benchmark for biodynamic viticulture and ultra-precise, terroir-driven winemaking, producing some of the most coveted bottles in the world. With extremely low yields, fastidious vineyard work, and a philosophy of minimal intervention, Domaine Leroy captures an almost unmatched purity and intensity of place in its wines. The domaine’s holdings across prestigious villages and premier and grand cru sites, including Savigny-lès-Beaune, have earned it a legendary reputation among collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts alike.
