Description
The 2012 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru is a sublime expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most coveted terroirs. Sourced from the tiny Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine marries finesse, depth, and remarkable aging potential. Its name alludes both to the Morello cherry character so often found in the wine and to the chalk (“craie”) rich soils that underpin its elegance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Griotte-Chambertin shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet hints beginning to appear at the rim, a sign of graceful evolution. The nose is layered and refined, offering kirsch and candied cherry alongside notes of rose petal, fine leather, nutmeg, and subtle spice. With air and age, more complex nuances emerge: truffle, undergrowth, and a delicate gamey touch that speaks clearly of mature Grand Cru Pinot Noir.
On the palate, this wine is both silky and concentrated, with a core of ripe red and black cherry framed by precise acidity and ultra-fine tannins. The tannic structure is present but never harsh; instead, it supports a long, persistent finish laced with mineral tension, sweet spice, and savory undertones. Already beautiful now, the 2012 has the architecture to age for 15–25 years from vintage, with top bottles capable of evolving gracefully for up to 40 years under ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
Griotte-Chambertin is a Grand Cru parcel of less than 3 hectares, centrally situated among the famed vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin and resting on predominantly limestone-rich soils with a thin layer of clay. This chalky subsoil contributes to the wine’s precision, aromatic lift, and mineral backbone. Domaine Joseph Drouhin is known for meticulous, environmentally respectful viticulture, including careful canopy management and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the Pinot Noir grapes are traditionally vinified with a gentle extraction to preserve finesse, followed by élevage in French oak barrels—often with a restrained proportion of new oak—to allow the purity of fruit and the distinctive Griotte terroir to shine through.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is a natural partner for refined dishes such as roast duck with cherries, pigeon, venison, braised hare, or slow-cooked lamb, as well as earthy preparations featuring truffle, wild mushrooms, or root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or Gruyère. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F). Decant gently 1–2 hours before serving for a younger bottle to allow the bouquet to open; mature bottles should be handled delicately and may only need a brief, careful decant to remove sediment.
