Description

The 2012 Domaine Chevigny-Rousseau Echezeaux Grand Cru is a poised, terroir-driven expression of Burgundy’s most noble grape, Pinot Noir, from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most illustrious vineyards. Sourced from the storied Grand Cru of Échezeaux and crafted by a small family estate in Vosne-Romanée, this wine balances power, elegance, and a strong sense of place. The 2012 vintage—celebrated for its concentration and classic structure—adds an extra layer of depth and aging potential to this already distinguished bottling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Echezeaux Grand Cru shows a deep, shimmering ruby core with garnet reflections beginning to appear along the rim, a sign of its graceful evolution. The nose is complex and layered, offering an alluring bouquet of ripe red and black cherries, wild strawberries, and blackberries, interwoven with notes of dried rose petals, violets, and subtle forest floor. With air, deeper tones emerge—truffle, dark cocoa, sweet spice, and a touch of fine cedar from its élevage in oak. On the palate, the wine is both silky and structured, with the hallmark finesse of top-tier Pinot Noir. Juicy red and dark berry fruit sits at the core, supported by nuances of licorice, clove, dried herbs, and a faint savory, gamey edge that adds intrigue. The tannins are ultra-fine yet persistent, wrapped in vibrant, well-integrated acidity that keeps the wine lifted and precise. The finish is long, elegant, and mouthcoating, leaving echoes of red fruit, spice, and mineral tension. This 2012 has entered a beautiful drinking window, but it still has the structure and balance to develop further complexity over the next 8–12 years under proper cellaring.

Production
Domaine Chevigny-Rousseau farms roughly 4 hectares around Vosne-Romanée, including prized parcels in Grand Cru terroir such as Échezeaux. Here, the vines grow on gently sloping hillsides of limestone-rich soils mixed with clay, a classic Burgundian combination that gives Pinot Noir both aromatic lift and depth of flavor. Practicing lutte raisonnée and certified for environmentally friendly methods, the domaine emphasizes careful, sustainable work in the vineyards, including low yields and meticulous, largely manual vineyard care. Harvest is done by hand to ensure that only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are brought to the cellar. Fermentations rely on natural yeasts, allowing the character of the vintage and vineyard to shine through, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a portion of which is new. This traditional, terroir-focused approach yields a wine that captures the nuance and refinement of Echezeaux Grand Cru.

Food & Serving
This 2012 Echezeaux Grand Cru is a superb companion for refined, savory dishes that highlight its intricate layers. Think roast duck with cherries, pigeon, or squab; veal or lamb chops with wild mushrooms; or classic Burgundian fare such as coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, game birds, and well-aged, semi-soft cheeses like Époisses or Brillat-Savarin. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to showcase its aromatics and texture. Decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving is recommended at this stage of its evolution, helping the wine open and reveal its full aromatic range.

Producer
Domaine Chevigny-Rousseau is a small, family-owned estate based in Vosne-Romanée, at the heart of some of Burgundy’s most coveted terroirs. Founded in 1947 by Lucien Chevigny, who planted the first vines in Vosne-Romanée for the family, the domaine takes its name from the union of the Chevigny and Rousseau families. Since 1984, Lucien’s descendant Pascal Chevigny has been at the helm, carefully expanding the estate’s reputation while remaining firmly rooted in traditional Burgundian craftsmanship. With around 4 hectares under vine and a focus on Pinot Noir from prestigious sites—including Grand Cru holdings—Domaine Chevigny-Rousseau has become known for precise, terroir-expressive wines. Their commitment to sustainable viticulture, hand harvesting, native fermentations, and thoughtful oak aging has solidified the domaine’s standing as a quality-driven, terroir-focused producer in the Vosne-Romanée landscape.
