Description

The 2012 Château Tertre Roteboeuf Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a lavish, characterful Right Bank Bordeaux from one of the appellation’s most distinctive estates. Crafted in tiny quantities and highly sought after by collectors, it showcases the estate’s hallmark combination of opulence, depth, and finesse. Perched on a dramatic amphitheatre slope and farmed obsessively by François Mitjavile, Tertre Roteboeuf has become a cult reference in Saint-Émilion since the 1980s, consistently producing wines that stand apart for their sensual, almost Burgundian texture.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Tertre Roteboeuf is deep garnet to ruby with a velvety, almost opaque core and a gently bricking rim just beginning to show its evolution. The nose is intensely expressive and exotic: ripe black cherry, plum compote, and blackcurrant mingle with notes of cocoa, mocha, warm spice, cigar box, and a touch of dried violet and truffle. Subtle hints of vanilla, cedar, and toasted oak are beautifully integrated rather than dominant. On the palate, this is a hedonistic, full-bodied Saint-Émilion with a silky, glycerol texture and impressive concentration. Layers of dark berries, black cherry liqueur, and fig are wrapped in fine-grained tannins and balanced by a vibrant, limestone-driven freshness. Flavors of dark chocolate, roasted coffee bean, sweet baking spices, and tobacco leaf unfold with air, leading into a long, perfumed finish. The 2012 vintage is entering a superb drinking window now, with enough structure and energy to evolve further for another 10–15 years under good cellar conditions.

Production
Château Tertre Roteboeuf is situated on a south- and southeast-facing amphitheatre of clay-limestone soils just outside the village of Saint-Émilion, a terroir that naturally concentrates fruit while preserving freshness and aromatic lift. The blend is typically dominated by Merlot (around 80%) with the balance Cabernet Franc, sourced from old vines and worked with low yields to maximize intensity. Harvesting is done by hand in multiple passes, allowing each parcel to be picked at optimum ripeness, often slightly later than neighboring estates to achieve Tertre Roteboeuf’s signature richness. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and texture, followed by élevage in 100% new French oak barrels for an extended period (often 18–22 months). The wine is bottled without aggressive fining or filtration, retaining its full character and depth.

Food & Serving
This 2012 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a natural match for rich, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or braised beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimum expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully, soften the tannins, and reveal its complex layers of fruit, spice, and tertiary notes.

Producer
Château Tertre Roteboeuf is a small, family-run estate in Saint-Émilion that has achieved near-mythical status among Bordeaux enthusiasts. When François Mitjavile took over in the late 1970s, he began crafting wines that broke with local convention—pursuing lower yields, later picking, and a uniquely textural, hedonistic style that quickly drew international attention. Though not classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé, Tertre Roteboeuf is widely regarded as one of the top estates on the Right Bank, frequently mentioned alongside the region’s most prestigious names. Its limited production, distinctive terroir, and unwavering commitment to quality have made it a benchmark for richly styled, age-worthy Saint-Émilion.
