Description
The 2012 Château Petrus Magnum is a commanding expression of one of Bordeaux’s most revered wines, presented in the highly coveted large-format bottle. Crafted almost entirely from Merlot grown on the legendary clay plateau of Pomerol, this vintage marries power with poise, offering remarkable depth and elegance. In magnum, the 2012 shows an especially graceful evolution, promising an even more extended and harmonious aging trajectory than standard bottles.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Château Petrus reveals a deep, opaque garnet core with a subtle ruby rim, reflecting both concentration and the first hints of bottle maturity. The nose is layered and seductive, with aromas of ripe black plum, black cherry, and cassis wrapped in notes of truffle, violets, graphite, and fine cedar. Subtler nuances of cocoa, licorice, and warm earth emerge with air, signaling the complexity Petrus is famed for.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a velvety, almost silken texture. The pure Merlot fruit is dense and precise, featuring flavors of dark berries, plum compote, and black cherry, framed by refined tannins and vibrant acidity. Mineral notes from the blue clay soils lend a firm backbone and tension, while touches of mocha, spice, and savory truffle linger on the very long finish. In magnum, the 2012 has excellent aging potential; while already approachable with proper aeration, it will continue to gain complexity and tertiary character over the next 15–25 years, and potentially longer in optimal cellaring conditions.
Production
Château Petrus sits on the famed plateau of Pomerol in Bordeaux, on the Right Bank, where a unique seam of deep blue clay over an iron-rich subsoil produces Merlot of extraordinary concentration and finesse. The estate’s vineyards are meticulously managed, with low yields, hand-harvesting, and rigorous sorting to ensure that only the finest berries are used. In 2012, careful vineyard work was critical to navigate a challenging growing season, resulting in intensely flavored, perfectly ripe fruit. Vinification is highly precise: fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance and purity of fruit. The wine is then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it develops its hallmark depth, texture, and aromatic complexity before bottling in magnum for extended, graceful maturation.
Food & Serving
The 2012 Château Petrus Magnum is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes that allow its complexity to shine. Think classic French cuisine such as roast lamb with rosemary, beef tenderloin with truffle jus, pigeon or duck breast, or slow-braised veal cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with earthy preparations featuring wild mushrooms, truffles, or root vegetables, and with aged hard cheeses like Comté or old Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and texture. In magnum format, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 1–2 hours before serving for current drinking, and longer if you open it in its youth—to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered bouquet.
Producer
Château Petrus is one of the most illustrious names in Bordeaux and a benchmark for Merlot-based wines worldwide. Located in the Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Petrus rose to prominence in the 20th century under the guidance of the Loubat family and later the Moueix family, who helped establish its reputation as a cult wine sought by collectors across the globe. The estate’s relatively small size and unique terroir—dominated by rare blue clay soils—contribute to its scarcity and singular character. Frequently commanding top prices and consistently earning critical acclaim, Petrus is widely regarded as a pinnacle expression of Merlot and a cornerstone of Bordeaux’s most prestigious cellars.
