Description
From one of Champagne’s most intriguing single vineyards, the 2011 Champagne Thiénot La Vigne Aux Gamins in magnum format is a rare and captivating expression of Blanc de Blancs. Sourced from an exceptional parcel in Avize, this cuvée showcases Chardonnay at its most precise and mineral-driven, with the extended aging and larger bottle size adding layers of depth and complexity. The 2011 vintage, often overlooked, has produced some beautifully expressive, finely structured wines—La Vigne Aux Gamins stands among the most characterful of them.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Champagne shimmers with a pale, luminous gold hue and an exceptionally fine, persistent mousse, a visual cue to its long maturation on lees. The nose is refined and evolving, opening with chalky minerality and citrus zest before giving way to white flowers, green apple, and hints of brioche, toasted hazelnut, and subtle vanilla from extended aging.
On the palate, La Vigne Aux Gamins is taut yet generous, with a racy backbone of acidity that frames flavors of lemon cream, crisp pear, and stone fruits, all underscored by a saline, chalky edge that screams Grand Cru terroir. The texture is silky and layered, gaining breadth across the mid-palate while remaining impeccably balanced and dry, with an elegant, long, and mouthwatering finish. In magnum, the 2011 still has excellent aging potential; while already beautifully open and nuanced today, it should continue to develop more tertiary notes—honey, toasted nuts, and patisserie—over the next 8–10 years or more under good cellaring conditions.
Production
La Vigne Aux Gamins comes from a single, prized parcel in Avize, one of the Côte des Blancs’ great Chardonnay villages, rooted in pure chalk soils that lend the wine its hallmark tension, precision, and mineral drive. The Chardonnay grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve both freshness and aromatic purity, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification is carried out with a focus on finesse—cool fermentations, predominantly in stainless steel (sometimes complemented by partial oak aging, depending on the vintage), followed by an extended period of maturation on the lees in bottle to build complexity, texture, and a fine, creamy mousse. The dosage is kept low, often in the extra-brut range, to allow the singular character of the vineyard and the 2011 vintage to shine through.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Champagne that pairs brilliantly with refined dishes. Think oysters and shellfish, scallop carpaccio, turbot with beurre blanc, poached lobster, or delicate crudo with citrus and olive oil. It also complements creamy yet elegant dishes such as poultry in a light cream sauce, truffle risotto, or aged Comté and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to let the aromatics fully unfold. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but for a magnum of a mature vintage like 2011, pouring the first glasses and allowing the wine 10–15 minutes in the glass can help it open up and reveal its full complexity.
Producer
Champagne Thiénot is a relatively young but highly respected house, founded in the 1980s by Alain Thiénot, a former grape broker with deep roots and relationships across Champagne’s top vineyards. Based in Reims, the estate has quickly earned a reputation for precision, elegance, and terroir-driven cuvées that stand confidently alongside those of much older maisons. La Vigne Aux Gamins is one of Thiénot’s flagship single-vineyard expressions, highlighting the finesse and purity of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. Over the years, Champagne Thiénot has gained recognition from sommeliers and critics worldwide for its meticulous vineyard sourcing, thoughtful winemaking, and its ability to craft Champagnes that are both expressive upon release and capable of graceful evolution in the cellar.
