Description
2011 Champagne Thiénot La Vigne Aux Gamins is a rare, single-vineyard Blanc de Blancs crafted from old-vine Chardonnay in the heart of Champagne. This cuvée showcases the precision and finesse of a single parcel, capturing the character of its terroir with striking clarity. Produced in very limited quantities, it is one of Thiénot’s most refined and contemplative expressions of Chardonnay-driven Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Vigne Aux Gamins 2011 shows a luminous, pale golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles that form a delicate, continuous mousse. The nose is elegant and layered, opening with notes of lemon zest, white peach and crisp green apple, followed by shades of chalk, white flowers, freshly baked brioche and a subtle hint of toasted hazelnut as it breathes.
On the palate, this Champagne is taut and precise, with a focused, mineral-driven core. The attack is lively and citrusy, giving way to flavors of pear, stone fruit and a touch of grapefruit pith, all supported by a pronounced chalky salinity typical of top Côte des Blancs Chardonnay. The texture is both creamy and tense, with beautifully integrated acidity and a long, refined finish echoing notes of citrus, pastry cream and wet stone. While already offering considerable complexity now, the 2011 La Vigne Aux Gamins still has strong aging potential; carefully cellared, it should continue to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, developing deeper brioche, nutty and honeyed nuances.
Production
La Vigne Aux Gamins comes from a single, high-quality Chardonnay parcel in the chalk-rich soils of Champagne, likely within the Côte des Blancs, a reference point for world-class Blanc de Blancs. The old vines here root deeply into pure chalk, giving the wine its hallmark tension, salinity and finesse. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and purity of fruit, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification focuses on expressing terroir over power: gentle pressing of whole clusters, cool fermentation to retain aromatic delicacy, and extended aging on the lees in the cellar to build texture and complexity. A carefully judged, low dosage allows the vibrant acidity and mineral character of the Chardonnay to shine through with clarity.
Food & Serving
This 2011 Blanc de Blancs is superb with refined, delicate cuisine. Pair it with oysters, scallop carpaccio, sashimi, or caviar to highlight its saline, mineral edge, or match it with lobster, turbot, or lightly butter-poached sole to play into its creamier texture. It also works beautifully with soft, bloomy-rind cheeses like Brie de Meaux or a young triple-cream. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to allow the aromas to fully express themselves. A brief 15–20 minutes in a decanter or in the glass after pouring can help the wine open up and reveal its more complex, toasty and nutty layers.
Producer
Champagne Thiénot is a relatively young yet highly respected house in Reims, founded in 1985 by Alain Thiénot after a successful career as a Champagne broker. Drawing on long-standing relationships with top growers and prime vineyard holdings, the house focuses on precision, elegance and terroir expression rather than sheer volume. Over the years, Thiénot has become known for its refined, contemporary style and for cuvées that highlight specific vineyards and grape varieties. La Vigne Aux Gamins stands among its most prestigious and sought-after bottlings, underlining Thiénot’s growing reputation as a serious player in the world of grower-influenced, terroir-driven Champagne.
