Description
The 2011 Champagne Krug Vintage is a rare expression of a challenging year, elevated by Krug’s uncompromising craftsmanship and exacting selection. As with every Krug Vintage, this cuvée is not a simple snapshot of a harvest, but Krug’s interpretation of that year’s unique character, captured in a single, precise blend. Combining power, depth and tension, it offers a distinctive take on Champagne that will fascinate both collectors and seasoned Krug lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this vintage Champagne presents a luminous, pale gold colour with a fine, persistent mousse that forms an elegant, creamy bead. The nose is layered and complex: notes of ripe citrus, candied lemon peel and white orchard fruits mingle with brioche, toasted hazelnuts, almond cream and delicate hints of honey, chalk and subtle spice.
On the palate, the wine is both generous and tightly knit, showing Krug’s hallmark combination of richness and precision. Expect a core of citrus and stone fruits—think baked apple, pear and lemon curd—wrapped in patisserie notes, roasted nuts and a whisper of smoke. A vivid, saline backbone and vibrant acidity give definition and length, leading to a long, mouth-watering finish with lingering notes of pastry, citrus zest and mineral tension. While already approachable with some aeration, this vintage has the structure and concentration to continue evolving beautifully in the cellar over the next decade or more, gaining further complexity and nuance.
Production
As with all Krug Vintage Champagnes, this cuvée is crafted from a blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier sourced from selected plots across Champagne’s finest crus, each chosen for the way it expressed itself in 2011. The terroirs range from chalk-rich slopes that deliver tension and minerality to more clay-limestone parcels that contribute texture and depth. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified plot by plot, with all base wines fermented in small, old oak casks—an essential Krug signature that builds complexity and subtle oxidative notes without overt oak flavour. After blending to capture Krug’s vision of the 2011 harvest, the wine undergoes its second fermentation in bottle and is aged for many years on the lees in Krug’s cool cellars, far beyond the regional minimum, to develop its fine mousse, layered aromatics and remarkable longevity.
Food & Serving
This vintage Krug is a gastronomic Champagne that shines at the table. It pairs beautifully with refined seafood dishes such as lobster with beurre blanc, scallops with truffle, turbot or sole with a rich cream sauce, and delicately prepared langoustines. It also complements roasted poultry, guinea fowl, veal in light jus, mushroom-based dishes and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Gruyère. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C (48–52°F), in a generous white-wine or tulip-shaped Champagne glass to allow the aromas to fully open. Decanting is not essential, but gently pouring the wine into a larger glass and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help reveal additional layers of complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug in Reims, Maison Krug is widely regarded as one of Champagne’s great houses, known for an almost obsessive commitment to quality and a singular philosophy: to craft the finest Champagne every year, regardless of climatic variations. Krug’s strength lies in its meticulous, plot-by-plot approach—treating each vineyard parcel as a separate wine with its own voice—and in its extensive library of reserve wines, which underpin the house’s signature style. The house has been a benchmark for prestige Champagne for generations, with Krug Grande Cuvée and their vintage releases consistently earning acclaim from critics, collectors and sommeliers worldwide. As part of Champagne’s elite, Krug plays a central role in defining what truly great, ageworthy Champagne can be.
