Description
2010 Recaredo Corpinnat Turó d’en Mota is one of the great sparkling terroir wines of Spain – a single-vineyard, single-varietal icon released only in the finest years and after an extraordinarily long ageing on the lees. Hand-crafted from a tiny 0.97-hectare plot planted in 1940 and bottled in just 2,874 examples, it represents the purest, most focused expression of Recaredo’s philosophy. First released in 2024 after more than 13 years of maturation, this is a world‑class alternative to top Champagne, with a distinctly Mediterranean soul.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2010 Turó d’en Mota shows a luminous, pale straw colour with subtle golden highlights and a fine, persistent stream of delicate bubbles – the visual hallmark of long lees ageing. The nose is refined and layered rather than showy: ripe citrus, baked apple and quince mingle with fennel, chamomile and Mediterranean herbs, followed by notes of toasted brioche, raw almond, pastry cream, chalk and a gentle hint of beeswax and dried flowers.
On the palate, the wine is at once ethereal and intensely structured. A vibrant, mouth-watering acidity carries flavours of lemon curd, yellow plum, salted almond and subtle stone fruit, framed by savoury nuances of baguette crust, hazelnut and wet stone. The mousse is ultra-fine and creamy, giving a sense of weightless power and precision. The finish is very long, chalky and saline, with a lingering impression of citrus zest, herbs and delicate oxidative complexity. Already stunning, the 2010 vintage has enormous ageing potential; properly stored, it will evolve and gain even more complexity over the next 10–15 years and likely beyond.
Production
Turó d’en Mota comes from a single, historic vineyard in the north-western corner of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, in the heart of Corpinnat, the cradle of fine traditional-method sparkling wine in Penedès. Planted in 1940 on a north‑east–facing slope, this 0.97‑hectare parcel sits on very limestone-rich soils and is sheltered by surrounding forest, creating a fresh Mediterranean microclimate ideal for slow, even ripening of Xarel·lo. Recaredo farms the vineyard without interventionist practices – organic and biodynamic principles, low yields and meticulous hand work in the vines. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand at optimal ripeness, then vinified using the traditional method with a second fermentation in bottle. Turó d’en Mota is produced only in exceptional vintages, and each bottle spends a minimum of 13 years ageing on its lees before manual, hand disgorgement without freezing the neck – a rare, artisanal practice that preserves purity and finesse.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic sparkling wine made for the table rather than the aperitif tray. It is outstanding with refined seafood dishes such as turbot, sole, lobster, scallops, or grilled langoustines, as well as delicately prepared white meats, roast chicken with herbs, veal sweetbreads, or truffled poultry. Its savoury, chalky depth also makes it a superb partner for aged hard cheeses, Manchego, Comté or lightly matured goat’s cheese, and for dishes featuring mushrooms or rich sauces where freshness is key. Serve at 9–11 °C in generous white-wine or sparkling wine glasses rather than narrow flutes to let the aromas unfold. For bottles with several more years of age, a gentle decant of 15–20 minutes can help the wine open up, but handle it delicately to preserve the fine mousse.
Producer
Recaredo is one of the benchmark names in Spanish sparkling wine and a founding member of Corpinnat, the quality-focused collective that broke away from DO Cava in 2016 to highlight terroir, traditional methods and long ageing. Based in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia in Penedès, south of Barcelona, the family-run house has built its reputation on low yields, estate-grown fruit, organic and biodynamic practices, and extended lees ageing that often surpasses that of many famous Champagne houses. All bottles are disgorged by hand, without freezing the neck, a rare and labour-intensive technique that underscores their artisanal approach. Turó d’en Mota stands as Recaredo’s flagship single-vineyard wine and has helped cement the estate’s status as a master of long-aged, terroir-driven sparkling wines that rival the world’s greatest cuvées.
