The nose is intense, layered and immediately complex: black cherry, blackcurrant and ripe blackberry interwoven with notes of dried rose petals, cedar cigar box, graphite, pencil shavings, tobacco leaf and earthy autumn forest floor. Hints of cocoa, smoked tea and exotic spice reveal themselves with air, underlining the wine’s depth. On the palate, this is full-bodied, concentrated and incredibly refined, with that unmistakable Latour structure. Dense, pure black fruit—cassis, black plum and black cherry—unfolds over a framework of firm, fine-grained, almost powdery tannins. Production
Château Latour’s vineyards lie on Pauillac’s famed gravel plateau, a deep layer of well-drained Garonne gravels over a subsoil of clay and limestone that is particularly favorable to Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grand Vin is sourced from the estate’s historic “Enclos,” a walled centerpiece of old vines that captures the essence of this exceptional terroir, with its combination of warmth, drainage and mineral tension. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, parcel by parcel, allowing for rigorous selection of bunches at the optimal moment of ripeness. After careful sorting, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, typically with a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (often around 90%), supported by Merlot and small amounts of Petit Verdot and/or Cabernet Franc. The wine is then aged in a high percentage of new French oak barrels for around 18–20 months, with meticulous élevage and blending, yielding a wine of great purity, structure and age-worthiness.

Think roast or grilled rib of beef, côte de boeuf, rack of lamb with rosemary, braised venison, or slow-cooked game birds with wild mushrooms and truffle. Mature hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or well-aged cheddar also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and aromatics.
