Description
Created as a visionary joint venture between Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi, the 2009 Seña 25th Anniversary Edition represents the pinnacle of Chilean fine wine. First released with the 1995 vintage as Chile’s original ‘Icon wine’, Seña helped redefine what ultra-premium Chilean reds could be on the world stage. This rare 25th Anniversary library release from the estate celebrates a quarter-century of excellence, showcasing a beautifully mature yet remarkably vibrant Bordeaux-style blend from one of Chile’s most lauded vintages.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Seña shows a deep garnet core with subtle brick hues at the rim, reflecting its graceful bottle age. The nose is wonderfully layered and expressive, unfolding with floral tones of violet and dried rose, followed by notes of orange zest, ripe blackcurrant, plum and black cherry. Underneath, you’ll find hints of tobacco leaf, cedar, sweet baking spices and a touch of creamy vanilla, framed by subtle earthy and graphite nuances.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with a seamless, silky texture and superb freshness for its age. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and cassis-driven purity, while Carmenere and Malbec add plush dark fruit, spice and a gentle herbal lift; Petit Verdot contributes colour and fine-grained tannin. Flavours of blackcurrant, ripe raspberry, cocoa and sweet spice are carried on vibrant acidity, giving the wine a long, clean, and precisely defined finish. At this stage it is in a beautiful drinking window, showing tertiary complexity but still very much alive and energetic, with the potential to develop further nuance over the next 5–8 years if well cellared.
Production
Seña is crafted from a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Carmenere and Petit Verdot, sourced from hillside vineyards in Chile’s Aconcagua Valley, where a Mediterranean climate, cooling Pacific breezes and varied volcanic and alluvial soils provide ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. The estate has been farmed biodynamically for around 15 years, emphasizing soil health, biodiversity and a naturally balanced vine canopy. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimum ripeness and carefully sorted before fermentation, which takes place predominantly in stainless steel tanks, with around 10% in concrete vats to enhance texture and purity of fruit. The final blend is then aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, around 80% new, with a portion matured in large-format Stockinger casks to bring finesse and harmony rather than overt oakiness, resulting in an elegant, integrated and ageworthy wine.
Food & Serving
The 2009 Seña is a natural partner for refined, contemporary cuisine built around top-quality meat and richly flavoured dishes. Think dry-aged beef, roast lamb with Mediterranean herbs, venison or other game, and slow-braised short ribs, as well as truffled mushroom dishes, chargrilled vegetables and hard, mature cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimum expression of aroma and texture. Given its age and complexity, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and to gently separate it from any light sediment that may have formed in bottle.
Producer
Seña was founded in the mid-1990s as a groundbreaking collaboration between Chilean wine pioneer Eduardo Chadwick and Napa Valley legend Robert Mondavi, with the explicit aim of creating Chile’s ultimate world-class red wine. Based in the Aconcagua Valley, the estate quickly became a benchmark for Chilean fine wine and a leader in biodynamic viticulture. Seña’s international reputation was cemented by its performance in the now-famous ‘Berlin Tasting’ series, where it ranked alongside – and in some cases above – icons such as Château Margaux, Château Lafite Rothschild, Stag’s Leap and Sassicaia, including a first place in Budapest and a second place in Hong Kong with the 2007 vintage. Today, Seña stands as one of Chile’s most important and collectible wines, regularly cited as a reference point for the country’s potential at the highest level.
