Description
The 2009 Château Palmer Margaux Grand Cru Classé is a benchmark Left Bank Bordeaux from a truly exceptional vintage, combining power, purity, and exquisite finesse. This is Palmer at its most seductive: richly textured, deeply aromatic, and effortlessly elegant, yet built for decades of graceful evolution. Sourced from one of Margaux’s most revered estates, this wine showcases the harmony between Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, Merlot’s plush fruit, and Petit Verdot’s spicy complexity. Classified as a Third Growth in the historic 1855 Classification—but long regarded by collectors as performing at Second Growth or even First Growth level—Château Palmer has earned a reputation for producing some of the silkiest, most perfumed wines in the Médoc. The 2009 vintage is widely considered one of its modern greats, a bottle that encapsulates both the grandeur of Bordeaux and the sensual allure of Margaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Château Palmer is a deep, opaque garnet with a dense core and just a hint of brick starting to form at the rim—an indication of graceful early maturity while still very much in its prime. The wine’s appearance already suggests concentration and richness, with slow, viscous legs that cling to the sides of the glass.
The nose is intensely expressive and layered: ripe blackberries, cassis, and black plum are interwoven with violets, rose petals, and a subtle graphite minerality. With air, more complexity unfolds—cedar box, fine tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, espresso, licorice, and a touch of truffle and warm spice (clove and nutmeg). It’s both hedonistic and refined, a classic Margaux perfume amplified by the generosity of the 2009 vintage.
On the palate, this is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a luxurious, velvety texture. Ripe black and red fruits—blackcurrant, black cherry, and macerated raspberry—unfold over finely polished tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the richness in perfect check. Notes of cedar, pencil shavings, cocoa, and savory herbs emerge towards the mid-palate, flowing into a long, layered finish marked by dark fruit, floral tones, and a lingering mineral edge. The oak is beautifully integrated, framing the fruit rather than dominating it.
In terms of aging potential, 2009 Palmer is still on an upward trajectory. While already glorious and accessible, especially with proper aeration, it has the structure and concentration to continue evolving for another 15–20 years at least, depending on storage conditions. Expect further development of tertiary notes—leather, truffle, forest floor, and cigar box—as it matures, while retaining its signature Margaux elegance.
Production
Château Palmer’s vineyards lie on the deep gravel terraces of Margaux in the Médoc, a terroir famed for its superb drainage and heat retention, ideal for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions. Beneath the gravel, layers of clay and sand contribute complexity, freshness, and a particularly sensual texture to the wines, often giving Palmer a slightly more opulent, Merlot-influenced profile than many of its neighbors. The estate is planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a smaller proportion of Petit Verdot, and has been progressively embracing organic and biodynamic farming practices to express the terroir with greater purity.
Harvest in 2009 was conducted parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with meticulous sorting in both vineyard and cellar to ensure only perfectly healthy, concentrated berries were used. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for gentle extraction of color, flavor, and tannin, followed by a long maceration to build structure and depth. The grand vin was then aged in French oak barriques—of which a high proportion were new—for around 18–20 months, with regular racking and careful blending to achieve Palmer’s signature balance of richness, perfume, and finesse.
Food & Serving
The 2009 Château Palmer is an outstanding partner for refined, richly flavored dishes that can match its depth without overwhelming its elegance. Classic pairings include roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin or ribeye, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or veal with morel mushrooms. It also shines alongside game birds such as pigeon or guinea fowl, and with earthy components like truffle, wild mushrooms, and root vegetables. For cheese, choose aged hard cheeses—Comté, aged Gouda, or mature cheddar—or a well-aged Parmesan.
Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and its silky texture. For bottles opened now, decanting is highly recommended: 1–2 hours for a younger, more powerful expression, or 45–60 minutes if the wine has already seen some bottle age and you wish to preserve more nuance. Use a large Bordeaux-style glass to allow the bouquet to fully unfold.
Producer
Château Palmer is one of the most admired estates in Margaux, located on Bordeaux’s Left Bank and classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification. Over the decades, it has consistently outperformed its official ranking, earning a loyal following among collectors and critics who often place it alongside the region’s top names. The château takes its name from Charles Palmer, an English general who acquired the estate in the early 19th century and laid the groundwork for its future renown.
In the modern era, Palmer has become synonymous with sensual, perfumed wines that marry the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the opulence of Merlot, often in slightly higher Merlot proportions than many Médoc peers. The estate has been at the forefront of quality-focused innovation in the region, embracing low yields, rigorous selection, and, more recently, organic and biodynamic viticulture. Its wines, including the 2009 Grand Vin, are widely regarded as reference points for the Margaux appellation: wines of depth, elegance, and remarkable aging potential.
