Description

From a secret walled vineyard in the heart of Reims comes one of Champagne’s most coveted blancs de blancs: 2009 Champagne Lanson Clos Lanson. This tiny, one-hectare monopole of old Chardonnay vines, enclosed within the historic city walls and overlooking the cathedral, yields an exquisitely pure and limited cuvée. The 2009 vintage marries the chalk-driven tension and delicately woody signature of Clos Lanson with the natural generosity of this warm, near-perfect growing year, resulting in a Champagne of rare finesse and depth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clos Lanson 2009 shows a pale, luminous golden hue, animated by an abundant stream of ultra-fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is pristine and seductive, opening with ripe orchard and stone fruits, dried fruits and a subtle vanilla note from oak. With air, layers of white peach, bergamot, toasted hazelnut, almond and a hint of brioche emerge, all wrapped in a cool chalky lift. On the palate, the wine begins with a caressing softness and creamy texture, immediately balanced by a vibrant, saline minerality that is the hallmark of this clos. Flavours of white and citrus fruits – lemon zest, grapefruit, pear – mingle with pastry notes and a very delicate, integrated wood character. The finish is remarkably long, tapering on fine chalk, toasted nuts and a whisper of spice. Thanks to its 100% Chardonnay composition, no malolactic fermentation, and a minimum of 10 years’ cellar ageing before release, Clos Lanson 2009 offers outstanding aging potential; it is compelling now but will continue to develop complexity and tertiary nuance over the next decade or more.

Production
Clos Lanson is a unique urban clos: a single, walled hectare of Chardonnay planted in the 18th century above Lanson’s historic cellars in central Reims. Benefiting from exceptionally pure, chalk-rich soils and a singular urban microclimate, the vineyard is farmed according to biodynamic principles and tended like a garden, with meticulous work carried out vine by vine. Harvested by hand on 9 September 2009 by the men and women of the house, the grapes reached perfect ripeness after a warm, dry, sunny end to summer, balanced by timely rains that plumped the fruit. Vinification for this cuvée is carried out in oak barrels from the Argonne forest – uniquely for Lanson, Clos Lanson is the only cuvée to be fully barrel-vinified – and the base wines are made without malolactic fermentation to preserve tension, freshness and precision. After blending, the Champagne is aged for a minimum of 10 years on lees in the cool, deep cellars beneath the vineyard, and only a very limited number of bottles (up to around 8,000) are released when the house deems them ready, independent of strict vintage order.

Food & Serving
Clos Lanson 2009 is a gastronomic Champagne that shines alongside refined, delicately prepared dishes. Its chalky minerality and citrus-driven freshness make it an ideal partner for oysters, caviar, and fine shellfish, as well as carpaccio of scallops, turbot, sole or other noble white fish, especially with beurre blanc or citrus accents. The creamy texture and subtle oak also suit poultry with morel or truffle, lobster with butter sauces, and lightly aged cheeses such as Comté or refined goat’s cheese. Serve well-chilled but not icy, at around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics to unfold. Decanting is not essential, but gently pouring into large-bowled Champagne glasses 20–30 minutes before serving will help reveal the full complexity of this mature, barrel-aged blanc de blancs.

Producer
Founded in 1760, Maison Lanson is one of Champagne’s oldest and most historically significant houses, based in Reims. Known for its distinctive, non-malolactic style that favours energy, tension and longevity, Lanson has long been a reference for connoisseurs seeking vibrant, ageworthy Champagnes. The creation of Clos Lanson as an iconic single-vineyard cuvée underscores the house’s deep connection to its urban terroir and its commitment to precision viticulture. Internationally recognised, Lanson holds the prestigious UK Royal Warrant and is famously poured at the Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis championships each year. By releasing Clos Lanson only when it has reached its ideal maturity – and in strictly limited quantities distributed via the Place de Bordeaux – the house reinforces its stature as a benchmark producer in the Champagne region.
