Lokoya Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 is a benchmark Napa Valley mountain wine, sourced exclusively from the elevated slopes of Howell Mountain AVA. With its volcanic soils, rocky terrain, and tiny, intensely flavored berries, it delivers the kind of depth, structure, and precision that have made Lokoya one of California’s most respected names in terroir-driven Cabernet.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the classic dark intensity of mountain Cabernet, with a near-opaque core and a refined, serious presence. The nose is layered with blackcurrant, black cherry, blackberry, and dark plum, followed by graphite, cedar, tobacco, mocha, and dark chocolate. As it opens, subtler notes of truffle, leather, spice, and volcanic minerality emerge. The palate is powerful yet remarkably focused, combining concentration with freshness and finely grained tannins. It finishes long and complex, with impressive persistence and a sense of structure that suggests plenty of life ahead. While already beginning to show some early maturity, the wine still has many years of aging potential.

Production
The fruit comes solely from Howell Mountain vineyards, where vines grow at high altitude in volcanic, rock-strewn soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected before undergoing temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine is then aged for around 18 to 22 months in French barriques, mostly new oak, to balance the mountain wine’s powerful structure with polish and finesse.

Food & Serving
Best served with dry-aged beef, wagyu, lamb shank or rack of lamb, and rich game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-based recipes, aged hard cheeses, and refined gourmet cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours, especially if opening now, to allow the wine’s aromatics and texture to fully unfold.
