Description

The 2008 Domaine Leroy Chambolle-Musigny Les Fremières is a rare and finely etched expression of one of Burgundy’s most finessed villages, crafted by one of its most revered domaines. Drawn from the Les Fremières lieu-dit in Chambolle-Musigny, this Pinot Noir marries delicacy with intensity, showing the precision and purity that define Lalou Bize-Leroy’s wines. In a classic, cooler vintage like 2008, this bottling offers a beautifully lifted, mineral-driven profile with exceptional aging potential for collectors and Burgundy purists alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fremières shows a luminous, medium ruby hue with a touch of garnet at the rim, reflecting both its age and finesse. The nose is detailed and intricate, opening with wild red berries, crushed raspberries, and red cherries, followed by rose petals, dried violets, and subtle notes of forest floor. With air, more complex layers emerge: fine spice, black tea, wet stone, and a hint of sous-bois that is characteristic of mature top-flight Burgundy. On the palate, this is precise and tension-driven, with 2008’s vibrant acidity giving the wine energy and lift. Silky yet firm tannins frame flavors of red currant, cranberry, pomegranate, and cherry pit, intertwined with savory notes of mushroom, truffle nuance, and a chalky, limestone-inflected minerality. The finish is long, linear, and persistent, leaving a trail of spice and floral perfume. While already showing beautiful tertiary complexity, top bottles from excellent cellars can continue to evolve for several more years, gaining even greater aromatic depth and textural harmony.

Production
Les Fremières lies on Chambolle-Musigny’s finely fractured limestone and clay soils, a terroir renowned for producing some of the most perfumed and elegant Pinot Noir in Burgundy. Domaine Leroy farms its vines biodynamically with extreme attention to detail—yields are kept very low, and vineyard work is entirely manual, with careful selection of bunches at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is used. In the cellar, Lalou Bize-Leroy favors minimal intervention: whole berries or a high proportion of whole clusters are often used, fermentation proceeds with indigenous yeasts, and élevage takes place in high-quality oak barrels (typically with a significant new oak component), without fining or filtration. The result is a wine that is both transparent to its site and deeply concentrated, capturing the signature perfume and silken texture of Chambolle-Musigny.

Food & Serving
This Chambolle-Musigny Les Fremières shines alongside refined, subtly flavored dishes that echo its delicacy and complexity. Think roasted pigeon or duck with cherries, veal tenderloin, Bresse chicken, or dishes built around morels, porcini, or black truffle. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, fine charcuterie, and aged but not overpowering cheeses such as Comté or a mild, well-aged Gruyère. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance; decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended for bottles opened now, allowing the bouquet to unfold and any initial reduction to dissipate, while older or very delicately stored bottles may simply be opened and gently poured.

Producer
Domaine Leroy is one of Burgundy’s most legendary and sought-after producers, often mentioned in the same breath as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Armand Rousseau. Its roots trace back to the late 19th century with the founding of Maison Leroy by François Leroy, but the modern domaine was shaped decisively in 1988 when Lalou Bize-Leroy established Domaine Leroy and began acquiring and meticulously cultivating top vineyards across the Côte d’Or. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy, Lalou’s uncompromising standards—tiny yields, obsessive vineyard care, and ultra-precise cellar work—have elevated Leroy’s wines to near-mythic status. Today, Domaine Leroy is regarded as a benchmark for complexity, finesse, and longevity in Burgundy, with its rare, limited-production bottlings among the most coveted wines in the world.
