Description
From a hidden walled vineyard in the heart of Reims, the 2008 Champagne Lanson Clos Lanson is one of the rarest expressions of Blanc de Blancs in the region. Sourced from a single, one-hectare clos planted exclusively to Chardonnay, this cuvée captures both the purity of chalk-rich soils and the elegance of a benchmark vintage. With just 6,768 bottles produced and an extraordinary 12 years of lees aging, it stands out as a highly sought-after, collectible Champagne with remarkable depth and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Clos Lanson shows a luminous, pale golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles that form a delicate and continuous bead. The nose is strikingly pure and precise, opening with notes of green apple, lemon zest and white flowers, followed by hints of chalk, almond and a subtle toastiness from the extended lees aging.
On the palate, this is a vibrant, tension-filled Champagne, driven by the hallmark high acidity of the 2008 vintage. Crisp citrus—especially lemon and grapefruit—meets green pear, fresh apple and nuances of brioche, toasted hazelnut and a gentle creaminess. The long aging on lees has endowed the wine with a silky, almost velvety texture that balances its electric freshness. The finish is long, mineral and mouthwatering, with lingering notes of citrus peel and subtle salinity. Built for longevity, this Clos Lanson has excellent aging potential: it is already superbly expressive now but will continue to gain complexity and tertiary nuances over the next 10–15 years or more.
Production
Le Clos Lanson is uniquely situated within the historic city walls of Reims, directly above Lanson’s cellars, and is cultivated like a garden due to its intimate scale and exceptional setting. The one-hectare, walled vineyard is planted to Chardonnay on very pure, chalky soils that confer tension, minerality and precision to the wine, while the clos itself enjoys a singular microclimate that promotes slow, even ripening. In the near-perfect 2008 growing season, moderate temperatures, ample sunshine and well-timed rainfall allowed the grapes to mature gradually, developing ideal balance between sugar, acidity and flavor. The fruit was carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then vinified with meticulous attention to preserving freshness and terroir expression. After primary fermentation, the wine was bottled for secondary fermentation and matured sur lie for an impressive 12 years, followed by a minimum of 6 months’ rest after disgorgement to harmonize the components before release.
Food & Serving
This refined Blanc de Blancs is an outstanding partner for elegant, nuanced dishes. Pair it with oysters, caviar, sashimi, fine sushi or delicate shellfish such as lobster and scallops, as well as refined dishes featuring turbot, sole or poulet de Bresse in light cream or citrus-inflected sauces. It also shines alongside aged Comté, Parmigiano Reggiano or mild, nutty cheeses. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to showcase its precision and freshness. A gentle decant or allowing the wine 15–20 minutes in the glass can help it unfurl its layers of citrus, floral and toasty complexity, especially if served closer to cellar temperature.
Producer
Founded in 1760, Lanson is one of Champagne’s historic houses, long recognized for its fresh, vibrant style and for being among the earliest to export Champagne widely across Europe. Based in Reims, the house has deep roots in the region and a strong commitment to expressing the character of its vineyards, particularly through its Prestige Cuvées and rare single-vineyard wines like Clos Lanson. The creation of Clos Lanson from a unique, city-center walled vineyard underscores the house’s dedication to terroir-driven Champagne and precise, long-lees-aged cuvées. Over the centuries, Lanson has earned a reputation for consistency, longevity and finesse, with its wines frequently praised by critics and collectors for their capacity to age gracefully and their distinctive, chalk-inflected purity.
