Description
The 2008 Champagne Gosset Celebris Extra-Brut is a pinnacle cuvée from Champagne’s oldest wine house, crafted only in truly exceptional vintages. Combining Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from top Grand and Premier Cru vineyards, it delivers both intensity and refinement in a distinctly Gosset style. Aged nearly 14 years before release, this late-disgorged Celebris captures the incredible tension, depth, and precision that have made 2008 one of the most celebrated Champagne vintages of the modern era.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Celebris Extra-Brut shows a luminous, pale golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles that form an elegant, steady mousse. On the nose, it opens with inviting aromas of citrus oil and candied lemon zest, followed by dried white flowers, warm biscuit, nougat, and delicate notes of dried stone fruits and nuts. With air, the bouquet gains in complexity, revealing hints of honeycomb, chalk, and a subtle, savory minerality.
On the palate, this Champagne is medium to full-bodied, precise, and beautifully layered. A firm, pure fruit core—think citrus, white peach, and crisp apple—is framed by vibrant, spicy acidity and a chalky, saline backbone. The texture is both creamy and tightly structured, with the long aging on lees adding depth, brioche-like richness, and nuance without sacrificing freshness. The finish is long, penetrating, and mouthwatering, suggesting excellent aging potential; this 2008 Celebris will continue to evolve gracefully for at least another 10–15 years in a proper cellar, developing more truffle, toasted nut, and honeyed notes over time.
Production
Gosset sources the grapes for Celebris from some of the finest crus in the Marne district, focusing on Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards that average an impressive 95% on Champagne’s official “échelle des crus” scale. The terroirs are dominated by chalk and limestone-rich soils, which contribute to the wine’s tension, minerality, and longevity. Harvesting is carried out with great care to ensure pristine fruit, and only first-press juices are selected for this prestige cuvée. In keeping with the Gosset house style, malolactic fermentation is deliberately avoided to preserve the wine’s natural malic acidity, heightening its purity of fruit and capacity to age. The blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir then undergoes an extended maturation—nearly 14 years—on its lees in bottle, allowing it to develop its signature complexity, fine mousse, and remarkable depth before being disgorged with a very low extra-brut dosage.
Food & Serving
This 2008 Gosset Celebris Extra-Brut is a superb match for refined cuisine: think oysters, scallops carpaccio, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, lobster, or langoustines, as well as poultry in light cream sauces and delicate veal dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and subtly nutty Comté. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into large, fine Champagne glasses and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help it open up, revealing more layers of biscuit, dried fruit, and floral complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1584 by Pierre Gosset, a councilor and winegrower in Aÿ, Gosset holds the distinction of being the oldest wine house in Champagne. Originally known for still red wines from its own vineyards, the estate shifted its focus in the 18th century as the region’s production evolved towards sparkling wines. Today, Gosset is celebrated for its uncompromising, terroir-driven style and its decision to avoid malolactic fermentation, preserving a vibrant acidity and a hallmark tension in all its cuvées. By assembling the finest crus of the Marne—primarily Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites—Gosset has become a benchmark producer, with the Celebris range representing the pinnacle of the house’s craftsmanship and one of the most respected prestige Champagnes in the region.
