Description

The 2007 Champagne Philipponnat Brut Clos des Goisses Magnum is a benchmark single-vineyard Champagne from one of the most celebrated slopes in the region. Presented in magnum, it offers slower, more refined evolution and is ideal for collectors or for truly special occasions. Combining depth, tension and remarkable longevity, this wine showcases the pure character of one of Champagne’s greatest terroirs in a beautifully mature vintage expression.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2007 Clos des Goisses shines a luminous, pale gold with delicate, persistent streams of fine bubbles, enhanced by the extended aging that the magnum format allows. The nose is complex and layered: ripe citrus, preserved lemon and pear mingle with notes of brioche, toasted hazelnut and subtle smoke, underpinned by chalky minerality and hints of dried flowers and honey. On the palate, this is powerful yet supremely precise, driven by the naturally high acidity and concentration of the Clos des Goisses vineyard. Expect a full-bodied, vinous texture with flavors of citrus zest, yellow plum, mirabelle, almond cream and pastry, lifted by saline, chalky nuances and a touch of spice. The finish is long, dry and incredibly focused, with a lingering impression of citrus oil and mineral tension. In magnum, this 2007 still has significant aging potential ahead: while already harmonious and expressive now, it should continue to evolve beautifully for at least another 10–15 years under good cellar conditions.

Production
Clos des Goisses is a legendary, walled single vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Ay, one of the steepest and warmest slopes in Champagne, with inclines up to 45 degrees and an ideal south-facing exposure. The chalk-rich soils, thin topsoil and intense sunlight create a powerful, intensely characterful base wine. The 2007 is a blend dominated by Pinot Noir with a supporting share of Chardonnay, all harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both concentration and freshness. Philipponnat ferments a significant portion of the must in oak barrels, avoiding malolactic fermentation to maintain tension and structure. Only the first pressing is used, and the wine spends an extended period aging on its lees in bottle before disgorgement, with a low dosage to allow the unique terroir of Clos des Goisses to shine through.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Champagne that pairs beautifully with rich, refined dishes. Think butter-poached lobster, scallops with a delicate cream sauce, turbot or sole, roast poultry with morels, veal sweetbreads, or dishes featuring truffle and wild mushrooms. Mature hard cheeses such as aged Comté or Parmesan also work superbly, as do caviar and fine charcuterie. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics and texture to open fully, especially from magnum. Decanting is optional but can be beneficial for younger or tightly wound bottles; alternatively, pour into large white wine glasses and allow the wine to unfold in the glass.

Producer
Philipponnat is a historic Champagne house based in Mareuil-sur-Ay, with roots in the region dating back to the 16th century. Over generations, the family has built a reputation for producing distinctive, Pinot Noir–led Champagnes that emphasize depth, vinosity and terroir expression. Clos des Goisses, acquired by the family in the 1930s, is widely regarded as one of Champagne’s first and greatest single-vineyard prestige cuvées, and it remains the estate’s flagship wine. Philipponnat’s commitment to meticulous vineyard management, low yields and carefully judged oak use has earned them a place among the most respected producers in Champagne, particularly admired by collectors for the age-worthiness and gastronomic character of their wines.
