Description
2006 Domaine Leroy Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a rare and coveted expression of one of Burgundy’s most historic vineyards, interpreted by one of its most revered producers. From a cool, structured vintage and a legendary biodynamic estate, this is a wine that marries power with breathtaking finesse. For collectors and Burgundy purists alike, it represents a benchmark Grand Cru from a producer consistently mentioned in the same breath as DRC and Armand Rousseau.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2006 Clos de Vougeot from Domaine Leroy typically shows a deep, garnet-ruby core with just a hint of brick at the rim, reflecting its graceful evolution. The nose is intensely layered and slow to reveal itself: wild red and black berries, black cherry, and ripe plum unfold into aromas of dried rose petals, violets, forest floor, truffle, and fine spice. Subtle notes of tea leaf, sandalwood, and a touch of game and mineral-driven earth speak clearly of its Grand Cru origins.
On the palate, this wine is both structured and silken, with a concentrated core of red and dark fruits—think cherries, wild strawberries, and blackcurrants—wrapped in ultra-fine yet persistent tannins. The mid-palate is savoury and complex, showing sous-bois, tobacco, spice, and a pronounced, stony minerality that runs through the wine from start to finish. The acidity is vibrant yet perfectly integrated, giving remarkable freshness and precision. At this stage, the 2006 has entered a beautiful drinking window, offering mature tertiary complexity while retaining energy and lift. Properly stored bottles still have significant aging potential, easily another decade or more, with further nuance and aromatic depth to come.
Production
Clos de Vougeot is one of Burgundy’s most storied Grand Cru vineyards, a walled clos on the mid-slope of the Côte de Nuits, with a mosaic of clay-limestone soils that yield wines of power, structure, and deep complexity. Domaine Leroy farms their parcels here according to strict biodynamic principles, with extremely low yields, meticulous canopy management, and manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe Pinot Noir grapes reach the cellar. In keeping with Lalou Bize-Leroy’s philosophy, vinification is minimalist and precise: whole clusters are often used when conditions permit, fermentation proceeds with indigenous yeasts, and interventions are kept to an absolute minimum. Aging takes place in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where the wine is allowed to evolve slowly on its lees, gaining texture and aromatic complexity before being bottled with minimal handling to preserve purity and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Pinot Noir deserves thoughtful pairings and a considered serving approach. It is outstanding with classic Burgundian dishes such as coq au vin, boeuf bourguignon, roast pigeon, and guinea fowl, as well as refined game preparations—venison, hare, or duck with cherries or morels. Truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gruyère) also complement its earthy, savoury nuances. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to showcase both aromatic complexity and refined texture. For a mature 2006, gentle decanting 30–60 minutes before serving can help the wine open up, but avoid overly aggressive aeration to preserve its delicate tertiary notes and fine bouquet.
Producer
Domaine Leroy is one of Burgundy’s most illustrious and sought-after domaines, founded in its current form in 1988 by Lalou Bize-Leroy, though its roots trace back to the late 19th century with Maison Leroy, established by François Leroy. Over the decades, Lalou has built an almost mythical reputation, championing biodynamic viticulture long before it became fashionable and pursuing an uncompromising quest for quality through extremely low yields and meticulous attention to detail. Today, Domaine Leroy’s holdings include some of the Côte d’Or’s most revered Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, and their wines are among the rarest and most expensive in the world. Often mentioned alongside icons such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Armand Rousseau, Domaine Leroy is widely regarded as a reference point for complexity, finesse, and longevity in Burgundy, making bottles like the 2006 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru true treasures for connoisseurs and collectors.
