Description

Antinori’s 2006 Solaia is a benchmark Super Tuscan, crafted from a Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese grown in the heart of Chianti Classico. This is a powerful yet polished wine from one of the estate’s true golden eras, showing the depth, energy and refinement that have made Solaia a modern icon. The 2006 follows on the pivotal 2004 release, which marked a shift to separately aging the components before blending, a practice that continues to define Solaia’s contemporary style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2006 Solaia is deep, concentrated ruby with a garnet rim just beginning to show its maturity. The nose opens in layers: ripe blackberry and blackcurrant, bountiful black cherry, and dark plum, followed by grilled Mediterranean herbs, espresso, licorice, graphite and subtle sweet spices from fine French oak. On the palate, this vintage is full-bodied, structured and intensely focused, yet unusually silky for such a powerful wine. Dense black fruit and blackberry compote are wrapped around a core of vibrant acidity, with notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee bean, cedar and tobacco unfolding as it breathes. The tannins are sweet, ultra-refined and chalky, giving a long, driven finish that lingers with spice and savory herb tones. With its explosive energy and vertical structure, 2006 Solaia continues to develop beautifully and still has considerable life ahead. Properly stored bottles, especially in magnum, will drink at peak through the late 2030s and into the early 2040s.

Production
The fruit for Solaia comes from a dedicated 10-hectare vineyard on the southwest-facing slopes of the Tignanello estate, in the Santa Cristina in Val di Pesa area of Chianti Classico, at 350–400 meters above sea level. The soils are stony and rich in marl, providing excellent drainage and natural concentration, while the elevation and exposure ensure long, even ripening. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal maturity, parcel by parcel, to capture the finest expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc in each vintage. For the modern-era Solaia, including the 2006, the varieties are vinified separately in temperature-controlled tanks, with careful management of fermentation temperatures and gentle extraction. After maceration, the wines are transferred to French oak barriques—largely new—for malolactic fermentation and maturation, and only later blended once each component has fully expressed its character. The final blend is then further aged in barrel and bottle before release, resulting in a wine of remarkable polish, complexity and longevity.

Food & Serving
The 2006 Solaia is a natural partner for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary, slow-braised short ribs, venison or other game, and dishes with truffle accents. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Toscano stagionato and mature Comté. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style stemware. Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2 hours for standard bottles, and 3–4 hours for magnums—to allow the wine’s aromatic complexity and textural finesse to fully emerge.

Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with roots in Tuscan viticulture dating back to 1385. Over more than 26 generations, Antinori has been central to the transformation of Chianti Classico and the rise of the Super Tuscan movement, challenging traditional rules to pursue quality above all else. The Tignanello estate, where Solaia is born, was the crucible for this revolution, introducing barrique aging, Cabernet Sauvignon and meticulous vineyard selection to the region. Launched in 1978, Solaia quickly became one of Italy’s most coveted wines and a global reference for modern, world-class Tuscan reds. Today, Antinori’s consistent critical acclaim, pioneering spirit and commitment to terroir-driven excellence continue to place the house at the forefront of fine wine in Tuscany and beyond.
